Any recommendations for short term (3/4 days) accomodation within a short distance of Auckland city? We will just need something basic (as if any other type exists in nz) for a rest before setting off around the country.

What I meant was, there is a distinct lack of the sort of 5 star accomodation that one finds in other places. This is by no means meant as a criticism as I like that particular aspect of the country.

No offence taken, but Pete and I have stayed in some (not all) backpackers that have been better than reasonable hotels. would suggest that you look at the BBH.co.nz page and read up on the hostels there in Auckland, some will have ensuite facilities and will be fairly central, there will be a rating somewhere there too and they are fairly good ratings. You could do a lot worse for more money.

When my partner and I were there earlier this year we stayed at some campgrounds (KOA equivlents) that also had "cottages" available. We never used them but we may when we come back to look for a place to rent long term in January. I can't remember the name of the place but it is the chain that is all over NZ. They were quite reasonable and clean.

Thanks for the suggestions. A tent would be an option for later on in the proceedings, but we really just want somewhere to drop onto a bed and get over the flight.

Andy is currently staying in a brand new Studio (complex) in the City Centre, http://www.auckland-apartments.co.nz/ :clap - we checked out lots of 'cheap and cheerful' places, but there was either nothing available for the 10days we wanted or it wasn't ensuite etc. The link to these appartments actually came up as a Google add whilst I was on the forum. Maybe this is something for you?
