We are upgrading to Broadband here at home as part of Keith's work, and we want to go wireless, however, we have to pay for the wireless part (the firm are paying for the broadband) and I wondered if we got something like the Netgear wireless router can we bring this with us to NZ, will it work there?
If anyone has had any experience of this can they let us know please?
Many thanks

Hmmm, interesting that one Keith and Debby. The wireless part certainly will, that is no different, it is the part that connects to the broadband service.. will have to have a dig unless someone else knows!

It should work fine. Only thing that may not work would be an integrated modem/router. Just a router wireless or otherwise will be fine.

Our Netgear wirless modem now works fine here.
It took a while for Telecom extra and netgear to compatible, but after numerous calls to the customer service / help desk (via bangledesh and phillapinnes) it now works fine.
The power thing was the least of the problems, just got a plug converte.

So are the connectors the same then? Thought the BT type phone connectors were unique to the UK.

Yes, NZ uses BT phone connectors...
In terms of broadband, UK based ADSL gear all works here, you just need to change a few settings, see http://xtra.co.nz/help/0,,5739-907829,00.html
Wireless also works here, and is legal.

the cable from the modem / router to the wall doesn't matter. Although NZ does use the same as the UK, you can use a modem / router from anywhere. The router has whats called an RJ-11 socket on it (effectively a US phone socket) all you need is a cable to plug it into the wall.
Only things that are different for the dsl are the VPi / VCI settings in tehrouter, these should be changed to 0 and 100
when you set up yor router with your new username password, use the following NZ specfic settings.
VPI 0
VCI 100
Authentication PPP using PAP
Connection Type PPPOA Routed/PPPoverATM/RFC 2364
Encapsulation VC-MUX
WAN IP Dynamic
DNS discovery Enabled
DSL configuration G.DMT (G.992.1) or G.lite (G.992.2)
If anyone gets stuck give me a call.
