Hi well Bishops have been in today and half packed up the house, left the computer 1/2 a sofa the bed and the computer to last.

I was going to bring a few odd bits of food left in the cupboard, not opened ones, but was a bit worried about vermin.

Bringing some fajita mix, paxo stuffing, etc, few tins, jars.

what is the opinionr on packed stuff, will it attract mice etc in the container, if so I would rather leave it out.

Can't believe we are really going now. Feel better now the house is being packed though, kept thinking how could I be going in a few days when nothing was done.

Really looking forward to the trip, in Singapore and then the being there.

Hope to help you all with tips when we get there.

Jo, sorry I havent got any info or stories about vermin, but do bring it with you . I have fajita mix parceled to me in the dozens as you can not get it here. I wished I had brought heaps more of stuff than I did.

I have read somewhere that maf are not concerned with store cupboard foods. I use lots of garlic salt too and dont seem to be able to find that either.
The very best of luck in your journey.:nice1

Woolworths do the full range of El Paso mexican products - including fajita mix. :nice1 I'm sure I saw it in Fresh Choice too.

We brought canned items, hot sauce (in sealed bottles) and lots of seasonings in commercial sealed packets and MAF did not have problems with any of it.

I haven't been around much lately so just wanted to say have a safe and happy journey - I look forward to hearing your posts from the other side. May I just say that I am GREEN with envy (as I head outside into the cold rain following my foray into ice scraping off the windscreen yesterday - I DISLIKE WINTER INTENSELY!!)

Hi Guys,

I'm sure I've seen fajita mix in Countdown and Woolworths, so you should have no problems. I don't think mice will be a problem in the container, they wouldn't survive the journey I'm quite sure, I've never seen or heard any mention of mice in containers, and MAF would fumigate EVERYTHING if it was a risk I'm sure.

Cheers,

Mark. :P

Well, Debs ( of debnjohn ) likens Fresh Choice to Somerfields. Her words. I can't comment but I would say that I prefer them to NZ Woolworths for their better choice and quality of fruit and veg, good range of meat and sausages and bakery. I find them cheaper than Woolworths too. I have recently started doing all my shopping there (at the Parklands outlet in Chch) and it's heaps cheaper. Not sure if they are a nationwide chain.....

Oh well one less food store to visit. They look like an upper NI and SI store according to http://www.freshchoice.co.nz/locations/index.asp

Don't like our countdown/woolworths. It might be better when they have finished rebuilding

I don't like our local Woollies much either and I used to do my main shop at the Ferry Rd one and use the local one for a quickie shop until I found Fresh Choice. Going to have to find a decent supermarket in West Chch now... any suggestions from those that live out that way....

What is the policy on bringing foodstuffs into the country? I know if you tried to bring it in your suitcase you wouldn't be successful--but in a shipping container or by the post is OK? There are a few things I would like to bring with me.

Richard

as a principle if it's in a can or a jar it's OK.
What Maf are trying to prevent is food (and other stuff like outdoor wooden furntiure) coming into the country and bringing with it undesirable new additions to the wildlife which will harm NZ's fragile bio diversity.

It's not the apple you import that is the problem, it's the little worm inside it that turns into a monster butterfly that starts eating the sheep.

Re mice in containers- if there is a hole big enough to let a mouse into your container your belongings are going to get wet in transit. If poss you should try to check the container before your stuff goes in it. Stand inside with the doors closed - yu should not be able to see any daylight anywhere
