Could somebody please tell me the difference between a domain and a reserve.
Houses overlooking reserves sound quite scary as it makes me think of herds of wilderbeast and lions and giraffes!
Sorry if this a daft question but as usual I am a touch confused!

Reserves are just parcels of land between houses, and are usually trees & grass, and the odd dog being walked (no wilderbeest). Some have play parks on them, others have tennis courts, some are just native bush areas. the biggest ones round where I live are around three/four house plot sizes, around 4/5000 sqm?
Domain, dont know, it looks a similar thing to me, just bigger, and maybe more "managed" like a park?
There is probably an official explanation and I think we may have had a similar thread before somewhere  , cant find it though....

Hi
just looked it up in the NZ dictionary and it says RESERVE - "a piece of land set aside for public use, often with a defining word denoting the purpose of the reservation as bush, education, native."
DOMAIN " a public park or reserve, often in local use as THE DOMAIN.
so personally still can't really tell the difference, I know in some places the domain is where the tennis courts and park are, so maybe if oy want to play head for the domain and if you want to look at native trees head for the reserve!!
not sure that helped much I'm still none the wiser.
If you get the chance to read a copy of the NZ dictionary (we got ours free frrom the Kiwi Ora programme) it really is hilarious I might put some words in the lounge and get people to guess the meaning!!

i wish reserves had lions and tigers - it would make my new job as a reserves manager very interesting!!
Reserves are basically parks of various kinds in NZ. They can be for a number of purposes in NZ - local purpose parks, for kids play parks, for nature conservation / ecological values, for scenic purposes, for heritage / buildings, for recreation grounds like rugby pitches and club houses, for access to lakes and waterways etc - even the strip of land that runs alongside the road is classified road reserve. So it's a bit of a multi purpose term. The land is often owned by Council, but also often owned by another agency and managed by Council on their behalf. So if you see a reserve mentioned in the estate agent blurb, it might be worthwhile checking out what kind of reserve it is.
Domains are often reserves as well, but a particular kind. I don't know the official definition bu they tend to be highly valued, long standing local parks, often on hill tops in urban areas.

Hi
Thanks for the info. I'll (hopefully) have great fun trying them out at some point. The info regarding reserves is particularly useful.
Ruthyroo - best check the undergrowth thoroughly just in case! Good luck with the new job, bet it'll be really interesting.
LIsa - if you get time please, please post some words - it would be very entertaining I mean educational!!

Surely that's not the Oxford NZ Dictionary? If so, wow!

Hi Kat
well its worth doing for the books (lovely atlas, road code ect - must be a few hundred dollars worth) ooh and a poncho !!! but not really that useful in helping you learn anything - its VERY basic ie how do you run a chq acct and make sure you don't spend more than you have and about how to find a rental ect - most of the stuff you will ahve done before you get here and to add to the hilariousness of the whole thing they actually give you a book with all the answers in which is all set out exactly as the workbook is so not too much brain power is needed.
we both registered and its not really worth it - one of you do it to get the books as I said the dictionary is a scream and if nothing else will give you a laugh in times of tension - especially if you read it while wearing the poncho!!
hope this helps
Lisa
ps not sure about having to be here but I would guess so.

Hiya
Yes you do have to be here. I was a bit concerned though as they wanted to see my passport and keep a copy as proof of being here and for security reasons I was a bit concerned about that, so didn't go through with it.
I wanted it for the free books and poncho too. :o
