I'm hyperventilating slightly - back up to $2.87 at 12.45pm Mon 27 March NZT.
I don't want to jinx it, but thats not too far off our personal threshold - we aren't quite going for the ole 3 for 1 as that just seems a bit of a psycological barrier to me. Having said that, I would not be surprised to see it run away when it does hit that $3 mark. Westpac have previously been forecasting up to $3.33 by June 2007!

As at 9pm NZT on Tues 4 Apr and per HIFX, the dollar is pushing back to the $2.90 mark (its about a quarter of a cent off). The mini revival that saw the dollar drop from 2.90 back to under 2.81 late last week has unwound in less than 36 hours. Its all being driven by other currencies as there is no economic date or announcements of note in NZ due this week. I think there could be a lot of volatility over the next few weeks.

What a cool thread...the cyclical feelings of extreme excitement and despairing let down remind me of that UK advert for anti-perspirant where several sweaty guys are watching the football world cup. (The one where they keep standing up and starting to cheer and then drop onto the sofa looking suicidal as that all important penalty is missed again).

This was my fear also-but I've found out that certain currency traders(HIFX etc)allow you to effectively set a rate now and excercise the option for up too two years time, I'll be looking into this in more detail as like most people the majority of my assets are tied up in my house-
By the way; I've become almost an exchange rate boffin of late; studying all the reports I can find on the future direction and it seems all the experts expect the dollar to continue to weaken for the next 12 months-something to do with foreign bonds maturing and being cashed in.
I plan to move back within the next 12/18 months so now it's down to sleepless nights deciding when to go in and buy....or wait....!!!!!!!!!

Just a thought. When (if?) it reaches $3, does anyone think this will spark a mass orgy of cash transfers (think how many people have set to exchange "once it reaches $3)?
With all the sudden popularity of the NZ $ it might serve to strengthen the currency and bring the rate down again!!!:no

Why are there 2 exchange rates. I see a rate at £1 = 2.98 and then the tourist rate at £1 = 2.68. Is it possible to get the 2.98 rate when transferring your money between bank in uk to bank in NZ?
Smiler
10th May 2006, 10:33 PM
Hi Tony welcome to the forum.
I think $2.68 is the tourist rate you get when you buy/sell, like at the exchange bureau after they take their cut ermmm commission.

The tourist rate is a rubbish rate and cuts the exchange dealer a fair whack (to cover their costs etc) and is geared exactly to what it caters for huge volumes of tourists each changing comparatively small amounts of money. The HIFX rates are the inter bank rates and are not what you would get on changing up personal funds. What you will get will depend on who you use and how much you are looking to change. HIFX say they offer the best rates generally, they make their money on the margins. I bank with HSBC and at the point HIFX were offering 2.948 on the (unattainable) inter bank rate o their website, HIFX offered me 2.924, ie about 0.8% discount on bank wholesale rates which I thought was OK (there would have been no other charges). Didn't take it though, figured the rate had a little further to go, now its at 2.98 with HIFX (reckon I would get 2.96 or thereabouts with HSBC) I am tempted to change up!

With companies like HIFX you can make a forward buy. You pay 10% of the amount you want to convert up front, and you then specify the date you want to complete the deal in the future, and pay the balance at that time. You won't be able to make the transfer before the end date. However you'll get todays rate even though you don't complete the deal for say 2 months.
