I hope I'm one of the few people this happens to, but it's a good tidbit of info to file away for folks importing pets from the US :o

My roommate's foster dog attacked my dog on Friday, leaving him with 9 puncture wounds. My dog is supposed to fly to NZ in a couple of weeks. With MAF's concern about rabies and every other canine disease under the sun, I didn't know whether they would still allow him into the country, since the other dog had potentially exposed my dog to god knows what.

On Monday my pet exporter heard from MAF, and it turns out that only a vet's assurance that my dog is fit to travel is needed. I'm not sure whether this was a determination specific to my situation or not - but his rabies titre was high and the other dog's rabies vaccination was up to date.

Thanks for that info, that was most helpful to me. I sometimes foster dogs as well, not to mention we live in the country and have had the occasional run in with the neighbor's dog on our walks. Nothing lately, but once we were attacked and my older dog was really torn up, but only that, no disease or anything. I had wondered this very thing... thanks!
