Hi guys
i've tried searching the forum & have found some great links about shipping & packing stuff (definately taking extra shampoo, deodrant & my old faithful gravy block after reading some of the posts! hee hee!)
can any one help with more specific information about what you can ship in the container, for example: can you pack like a medical box with headache tablets, sore throat sprays etc etc?...i know it sounds daft :o but i've found certain brands over the years that i'm ok to take & wanted to take a small supply to begin with...then i'll experiment again when we've settled!
also, from reading other threads i notice that lots of you have taken certain types of store cupboard food (tins, packets etc) what is the acceptable amount that can be shipped? would it be ok to have half a dozen of certain things?
we will be packing our own boxes (as will be sharing a container) we assume that we will have to do a contents list for each box...is this correct? & if so should we include every single item or a general overview?
sorry for the daft questions, but any thoughts & advice will be gratefully received!
we booked our one way flights over the weekend for the middle of Feb...seems scary & exciting all at the same time!
thank you in advance

Paint and flammable products are a definate no go, and there we definately a post somtime in the past that covered this but it maybe was on the old forum. if I find it I will pull it up.
Have done that with the most useful looking one....has a good web address there. try typing in 'shipping container' it brings up 4 pages worth of posts some of which will perhaps be helpful.

Hi Chantell
You need to list prescription medicines but otherwise all normal bathroom cabinet stuff should be fine. Having just received our stuff I would say be careful of anything that could melt in the heat. Some of my lush cocoa butter stuff just slid out.:(
MAF/customs are very strict and will look at what they want and open any boxes. We had an inventory/general overview of each numbered box and then written on each box was a general description too. It certainly didn't say 4 pairs of mens shoes etc.
Biosecurity means they may want to look at anything wooden for Bora, walking boots, camping equipment, xmas decs (so leave the pine cones out) wicker cane. There is good advice on the MAF/Customs site.

No paint flammables. Garden shed stuff, garden furniture and tools have to be clean or they will sieze and charge you for fumigation/cleaning or disposal
Alcohol in normal drinks cupboard quantities is ok, even open bottles but if you have 20 crates of Southern Comfort, you will attract attention and duty to pay.;)
I bought (by accident) the remaining contents of our store cupboard but spices and seeds/herbs I'm sure are a no no.
But don't forget there really is a wide choice of consumer goods here and it is exciting trying new things too. It must all be getting exciting for you.
Hope this helps

thanks veronica & deborah for your replies & the web links where great (when i finally got the computer up and running again!) and reading through all the posts using the search option was mind blowing!!
think we should maybe take a box of everything with us! hee hee! is everything really expensive!? i've been to NZ on two extended holidays (& OH lived in NZ for a year) and we never felt that things where expensive, but after saying that, is it because we earning £'s and not $'s? anyway, definatley going to take advice from you experts on this & we are going to hammer the 'buy one get one free' at the supermarket over the next few weeks! :laugh as you say i am quite looking forward to trying some new things out (I loved Tam Tams!)
we are really excited deborah...but very nervous too! well i am, the OH seems to be taking it in all in his stride. we've booked our flights & I handed my notice in a work last week (scary!) it is really happening! just got to sort shipping our posessions!
thanks again for your help & hopefully chat soon.
Chantell
ps have to dash, just hoping that the off-licence will let me return the crates of southern comfort! :cheers

The packers will probably just label them 'kitchenware', bring them or spend a fortune and lots of time replacing. I wish we had.

Is he having a laugh? I think most of us girlies have brought in shedloads of shampoo etc? Next he will be saying it is flammable :exit
I'm sure I read alcohol is fine but not in 'commercial' quantities. The Pss rep that gave us a quote didn't say anything of the sort.
Our drinks cupboard and wine rack contents came through MAF/customs ok. good job coz I need them now.:raebanana
I've just got possession of my store cupboard stuff too, packed by the shippers, only cans though, no spices or herbs.

I haven't shipped any stuff but have to agree with Smiler. read the MAF link provided it is good. I have to say that MAF themself are good if you need to contact them by email.
I contacted them regarding bringing in 1 dried whole orange, (don't laugh it has sentimental value, it was originally a fresh orange in my sons first xmas stocking). He still plays with it in his toy shop when I let him. How many other 20p xmas pressents are still being used 4 yrs later?
MAF returned my email within 12 hrs giving me instructions on what I would need to do to bring the orange in 'legally',(have it heat treated), how long that would take and how much it cost($34apx). So my cheap xmas present becomes an expensive keep sake, but Im happy.
BUT your food as long as it is meat free should be fine. shampoo no problems.

Appologies if this has already been asked - I've done some searches but can't find an answer.
I know 'normal' paint cant be taken in in the containers, but has anyone managed to bring in childrens paints? My daughter is very into arts and crafts (as 3 year old girls are :laugh ) and I have a huge amount of them. I suddenly woke up in the middle of the night a few days ago and realised that we would not be able to take them. Can anyone tell us that they have taken any in?
Thanks
PS - I'm sure I read on here somewhere that all domestic spices are OK, from a US lady who had gathered quite an extensive collection.

Kid's paints are non-toxic with no solvents in them, so it should be fine.

Yes I brought water based craft paints in :clap too and some of those tubes of artists paint.
MAF looked at them though  but were fine with them.

Hi our packers advised this.
Things like non toxic paint etc OK BUT because they are in plastic cartons/tubes you have to be aware that due to the extreme weather the container experiences i.e. over the equator gets extremely hot. The plastic cartons can crack and obviuosly risk putting you other goods at risk of being damaged.
