We will probably buy a new car after arrival in NZ;

in Holland where we live now, it is possible to obtain
upto 8 % discount on a new one, sometimes even more ..

Anyone having experience with such buy, is it possible
to obtain more ?
we are thinking of a Toyota Avensis Verso or RAV 4 (5 doors) :nice1

It is all based on negotiations here. The price on the sticker is just a negotiating point. In the states you can get very detailed info about what the dealer is paying for the car but you can't do that here. I would suggest contacting some dealers via email a month or two before you come out and just tell them what you want and when you want it, tell them you are checking with a couple of dealers and then ask for their best price. I know they are discounting RAV 4's some, you should be able to do considerably better than 8% we got about 10% off a subaru. I contacted a toyota dealer about a Highlander and they offered it at 44.5 with all taxes/fees. This is about 25% off the sticker price, this was though a 2005 when the 2006's were just coming out.

Good Luck!

Difficult to give a cast-iron answer to this as it depends on a lot of factors.

Dealers have quotas, and if it's getting towards the end of a period and they need just that one extra sale to get their target and move into the next commission/discount band then you may be in for a good deal.

Run-out models, as they call them here, (when a new version has just been or is just about to be released) can provide good deals.

Whether business is good or not - it goes in cycles and if they're not selling much they may be prepared to give a good deal just to see something leave the forecourt.

What the opposition is doing - if Ford brings out a new model with lots of hoo-haa then the other dealers may have to do something to create a bit of marketing 'noise'.

When it comes down to it my advice would be to wait until you get here and shop around at that time as things change with the season.

By the way the only dealers to whom most of the above doesn't apply is Honda - in NZ all Honda dealerships are owned by Honda itself and they do not do deals - the list price is what you pay for the new vehicle. They have been doing this now for about 4 years and it seems to work for them.

We finally made a deal with a dealer in Auckland, and have
ordered a Ssangyong Rexton II;
It will be a demo car, we choose the color and the extra's,
and after 3 months when we arrive we will collect it;
We got 10pct off its price (incl.extra's) and no on-road costs.
think it's a fair deal :)

hi Pim,

Woow, you bought a car even before arriving here - you come prepared!!!
You going to drive straight to New Plymouth??
Or do you take time to explore a bit more of the North Island?
And why didn't you go for the good, old Toyota?

Cheers,
Anita
