I'm searching around the interweb right now, but is there a bus service that runs between Christchurch and Queenstown? I'd prefer to relax during the trip, but I wouldn't mind driving either. Would I be better off just renting a car and driving there myself? Are hitchhikers frowned upon in NZ? :D

Atomic shuttles, intercity coach, and Wanaka connections all go betwwen Chch and Queenstown. Atomic are generally the cheapest.

I've taken a coach between the two. Had a nice stop at Mt.Cook and time for a scenic flight. But I liked the return journey too- this time we went down to the West Coast on another bus and stopped at Franz Joseph Glacier and took the transalpine train back to Christchurch.

We drove, stopping at Omarama overnight to break up the journey. It was a lovely drive - absolutely stunning scenery.
