Just received letter regarding our EOI saying cannot have bonus points for qualification being on the Long term skill shortage or the bonus points that go with it for work experience in area of LT skills MEANING 15 points short of the 100 needed. Phoned them but still no luck.
I'm claiming points for my qualification in social work CQSW ( level 5 ) and bonus for over 10 years work experience as a social worker. Thought would get bonus for social work being on skills shortage list but have been told can't because do not have Bacholor qualification in social work ( level 7 ). I started S/W in 1989, qualified in 1993, became ATM and later Team manager and have/do supervised/manage both qualified and unqualified S/W's in current employment. It seems that all this experience counts for nothing because I do not have a Bacholor qulification as stated on column 4 of skills shortage form.................SCREAMING!!!!!!!.........when I qualified Bacholor in Social work was not an option it was CQSW then Dip S/W. HELP! does anyone know if it would be worth asking NZQA to assess my qualification together with my experience and if so what would be my chances of them equating it to a level 7? Thats the level they say I need to get the bonus points.

Sorry so long but my head and heart aches......and I know you'll all understand how important these points are

Sorry to hear about that, I had a similar catch 22 situation with my electician qualifications points- cant easily get a job offer until i'm in NZ, need a job offer and licence for the points needed to get there!!!!!!

I know the NZQA website list all the quals and levels but i suppose you have checked that. Or you could raise your points with a job offer, or go to NZ and apply once you are working there?

Sorry i'm sure someone on here must have a more specific answer.

In the meantime let me tell you i know how AAAGGHHHHH!!! feels- but keep looking there will be an answer. :nice1

Joy, if it's an option for you (i.e you can move to NZ fairly soon) i would suggest that you try applying for jobs from abroad. I know social workers are in demand here everywhere so it may be worth ringing potential employers and see if you can get a job offer. I know everyone says you need to be in NZ for a job but i have heard of highly sought after people getting jobs from UK before they leave (e.g. nurses). It certainly would be worth a ring.
i thought of doing the CSQW a few years ago - i didn't know it had become a degree. it seems incredibly unfair that NZIS are expecting people to have this qualification when it is really must be very recent!!!!!!!!! Yet another NZIS hoop to jump through. THey really don't seem to want anyone coming in do they!!!!? I can understand how frustrated you must be!

HI Hannah yes it is an option to get job offer from here but means taking a job without really having opportunity to see NZ before deciding where to settle..but it's one way.
I think it's unfair too given that Batchelor is fairly new for S/W, something to do with registration but I have checked and my CQSW would make me eligable for registration in NZ because of the date I took it ( no good for new S/W ). I'm on the Uk register, practicing social worker with Deaf people for 16 years + and would have thought that was enough..but alas
If workers need Bachelor to get points then NZ will get very new, inexperienced workers.
still got to keep at it....will find a way it's just good to be able to use this forum.

Hi Joy

My hubby and I don't have enough points to qualify so I set about emailing and sending out CV's to every company I could find relevant to Hubby's job (transport).

He had a telephone interview and was offered a job which enabled us to get General Work Visas and Student Visas for the kids so it is possible to do it this way.

We are unfortunately still stuck in the UK trying to sell the house but the Company who offered hubby the job have been very patient so far... let's hope that continues.

Good luck and don't give up, I'm sure you'll get there x
