Hi there,

Can anyone advise me when my daughter can start primary school in NZ? I know the official age is as soon as she turns 5, but what does this mean in reality?

She will be 4 next week, and would be due to start here in the UK in September - she is already desperate to go, having done a year at pre-school now. I assume that in NZ she would be starting primary school (equivalent to UK Reception) in the January after her 5th birthday at the start of the academic year, and therefore will be still at pre-school (or the equivalent) until December when she will be 5.

Is this correct? I don't want to give her duff info, as she will remember it and hold it against us :laugh :laugh :laugh I hope this is the case, as she will by then have had a good 6 months in pre-school (hopefully :nice1) then start at the beginning of the academic year as a true native. Can anyone give me the cut-off date for birthdays for the shcool year? (ie here in the UK any child born 1st September or after is the next year group)

I'm also trying to work out where abouts my son will 'fit into' the school year - he's born in late August, and so is the youngest in his year, and could have started reception at 4 years and 2 weeks! If we arrive in the first 6 months of next year, he would have been finishing year 1 in July, but I assume he would need to 're-do' the last 6 months of year 1? (I know this is an academic question as the schools curriculum will not be the same, but I'm just trying to make sure that we all have a vague idea what they should be doing)

Many thanks in advance,

Emily

PS - I'm not a paranoid parent who is pushing them into school; I know that the experience itself will be very interesting for them, it's just that we're trying to settle them quickly by having all the info.

Hi

Children start school here at all different times of the year, there are no set intakes. They can start on their fifth birthday or any date up until they turn six.

If you're daughter is five in December next year I would hold her off until February. They have the six/seven week holidays from around 20th December until February. My eldest turned five in November and is just doing one half day until the end of this term and then starting full time in February. We felt it was unfair for him to start full time school leading up to Christmas when they've got Christmas activities going on and no set curriculum. They tend to do five half days at kindy until they start school which is usually more than enough for them till then.

My middle child is 4 in July next year and would have started that September. She's now got another year to wait which is going to be hard as she already wants to go to school :-) She's just started the morning kindy sessions and has settled down well as she's got her older brother there helping her. It will be different story in Feb when he starts school and she's back on her own.

I'm sorry I can't answer completely, but both my boys will "miss" a year. One is 22 Sept and the other is 26 Nov birthdays. My oldest son is in year 7 in UK but will start Yr 9 in NZ.

Don't know if this is right but won't that make your boy go from being one of the youngest in his year to being one of the oldest?

We arrived in October last year, my eldest daughter had just started year 8 in England. She didnt jump to year 9, she just had to finish the NZ year 7 then started year 8 in Jan after the summer holidays. I was happy with this as I felt it gave her time to settle in and make friends.

Thanks guys - I know it doesn't really matter at this age, and that I'll find out when I get there, but just trying to sort out as many details as possible.
