My dog Silas landed in Christchurch this morning. All his pet emigration stuff went just fine. I had a 10-second cardiac event when the USDA vet scanned his microchip and said, this isn't the same dog as on the paperwork.

The vet was able to scan him again and get the matching number. Turns out Silas has two microchips - the family who had him before I adopted him must have had him microchipped too.

So no more fantasies of "just not going" to New Zealand now. Gotta retrieve the dog if nothing else. :p

Anyway, I'm really getting excited about going to Massey. And only 11 more days at my current job.

:nice1

Sweetpea,

Congratulations!! I love to read a post like that -- makes me a little less nervous about making my dog fly around the world! Glad all is well despite the terrifying moment with the wrong chip #.
:clap

Hi Sweetpea,

Everything will be fine, 11 more days and you can start your big adventure. :nice1

Good luck and happy travelling to Silas.

SweetPea-

If you don't mind me asking, who did you use for shipping? I'm curious about your experience since our puppies will be Welly-bound in a few weeks and we have mixed feelings about the shipper. We may just be over-anxious about the "fur kids" but I'd love to hear what your thoughts are.

Bon Voyage! It was only about 5 months ago we were where you are seems like such a long time! It will be a rollercoaster for a while but the ride is a good one!

Great news Sweetpea! I hadn't thought of sending the dog on ahead. I bet my husband would love to do that, only "mistakenly" send it to Australia or France.....:D
Good luck with the countdown,
Gil

Good on you, Sweetpea... and on Silas! Just please don't post here in a few days' time with demeaning self-snapped photos of your dog slurping Steinlager from a plastic bowl outside a motel, wearing a cheap green Warehouse singlet, and mouthing "Mom! Wish you were here, dude!!!" :laugh

Seriously, all the best as you guys see each other again and start your adventure together.

I used International Pet Transportation. I had heard great things about them, then not-so-great things about them, and I worried a little. But in the end, they did right by me. Silas left on the day he was supposed to, all the tests and paperwork got done in a timely manner, they kept in good touch with my vets, and they were able to get a quick answer from the MAF head guy when I needed it.

Pet Express (IPT contracts with them for their SFO-departure dogs) actually handled stuff on the ground on the day of Silas left. They seemed competent and nice and I think they would have been a good choice too. They employ an Aussie, for what it's worth. When I got quotes, they were about the same price as IPT, maybe a little cheaper.

HTH

And a big THANKS to everyone for their warm wishes. :)
