We are putting together a cost-of-living comparison and would like to know:
1. The typical cost of a dental checkup.
2. The cost of a 'physical', mamograms, or other medical issues of a preventative nature. Does the govt. health care cover such things?
Any input would be appreciated.

Here is a recent link for a little bit of info of Dr's and dentists http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5027
I heard a dental centre advertising on the radio for $25 check ups today. But I haven't had to visit the dentist or doctor yet, so can't help yet with the preventative part of the question. :D Health insurance seems reasonable here though.

The current govt believes in prevention, so rather than have people turn up up at A&E in the last stages they keep a check on things, for instance my OH is a diabetic, he has a free check up of his eyes, feet kidneys etc every 6 months at our local GP.

Took my son for tooth extraction last week. Xray and extraction cost $125 (about £50). We're on visitor visa so had to pay (free for children of residents/2 yr work permit)
Anyway, i asked the dentist if what prices are like and she explained that people don't register with a dentist, they just go where is cheap. she said the dentists sometimes offer special deals and this attracts punters in. I had visions of "Have one tooth taken out have another taken out free" or "3 fillings for the price of 2" or "x-rays half price, this week only".
gives a new meaning to the idea that dentist do work that doesn't need doing!!!!
Doesn't answer the original question of course, but interesting to see how dentists operate within a market economy!

Hi Gran
I don't know if you got my pm. Is the 'free' diabetic healthchecks normal for the Hibiscus coast area. Do you know if all doctors give the same 'free' service. We are in Red Beach, pm me if you wish. Thanks Trudy
