Long time no post... things are changing a bit around here, but definitely for the better. However, now I may have to start all over again in one aspect of my NZ research. Early on I had settled on Wellington as far and away the best choice for us. It's still my top choice, but for professional reasons we may end up in Auckland (at least at first). I'm going through a career change, and although things are obviously subject to change over the next few years, at the moment my new chosen profession (pastry chef, officially classified by NZ as "baker") is on the immediate skills shortage list for Auckland. It's likely that the profession will end up on the long-term list by the time we're ready to lodge an EOI, but just in case...

OH and I are childfree, will be late thirties/early forties at the time of emigration, and prefer to be closer to the city. No yard necessary, as long as there's just enough space for a wee BBQ grill! I would prefer to get downtown via walking or public transit, and would really rather not need a car for my daily routine; OH would drive even if he worked 1/2 block away, just because. The quality of schools is irrelevant; the quality of the nearby cafes and shops is vital. A tiny home with character would be nice, but we'd be very happy in a modern apartment or townhouse. Basically I'm looking for a neighborhood similar to Thorndon in Welly.

Any recommendations for Auckland neighborhoods to investigate?

You would probably enjoy the beach side suburbs, Mission Bay or St. Helliers, or inner city Ponsonby, Mt. Eden. Inner city flats are used by a lot of overseas students and may not suit you. This book may help it tells you everything about every area.
