I have to buy a new cooker. I want to buy one that can come with me if possible. What is the gas situation in NZ? Am I better off getting an electric one, or won't that work either?

Oh, the small things like this drive me crazy!

Can't really answer the question as to whether a gas cooker will work over here. However as to whether you should bring one with you depends on where to intend to live. Gas is not particularly wide spread and where it is available, it is a little like the mains water supply; only available within the town boundary.

The price of cookers is very competitive and if you bring one you must consider the availability of spare parts etc, so if you have to buy one I would suggest you wait until you get here. Added to this is the fact that most houses are sold/bought with a cook already there,so it will not be an urgent item to purchase.

Going back to the issue of gas, we had hoped to instal gas central heating but found mains gas very hard to find.

Have a look here, may help with if its available where you think you will be, but like Pam/Dave said, all houses come with a cooker (some look like Noah would have used them, but they are there! :) )

Gas can be provied by bottles as well, but dunno if you can convert a mains gas cooker to work on bottled gas as its a different gas type  , maybe get yourselves a cheap 2nd hand cooker to last you in the UK?

Should have added, Leccy one should be fine, just change the plug :nice1
