We are in the very beginning stages of getting our thoughts together to move to NZ and will be starting our application process in the new year.

The place that has stuck out to me so far has been Dunedin, can anyone tell me what its like?

From what I read employment is more difficult than in other part of NZ. My background is Financial Services & IT and my fiance is a hairdresser/complementary therapist. My teenage daughter is in banking/IT.

My fiance & I like the arts. sports & eating out. My teenage daughter is into music in a big way.

Would Dunedin be able to accomodate all our interests?? - well. as far as is possible?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Dunedin is a nice place, but very cold!!
The peninsular is just breathtaking.
As far as arts go, it's a big university town, so I would imagine they are alive and well, plus you have some of the best architecture in NZ.
As for music - same goes
Sport - you have the house of pain, and the otago highlanders!
As for work, I can't really help you except to say that I knew someone who was trying to extend here visa, to stay with her partner, and they had to go through this long long process while they checked that they were a couple. She worked in hospitality, but at the final interview it came out that she'd done a bit of hairdressing when she was younger. The official told her that if she'd said that at the beginning, she would have sailed through as it was on the urgent list!!

Thank You.

I'm surprised to hear it's cold though. It that cold compared to London?

I'm in the Isle of Man, which is pretty cold at the best of times - it has to be warmer than hear, plus it rains a lot here too.... :?

Ideally we want to be somewhere warm, not a major city, We're more a "townie" types, but busy enough to keep us occupied. We're not beach people either and are more than happy to drive to the beach.

I guess we will have to see what turns up for us in the way of jobs and go with that.

Thanks again.

I've visited Dunedin 3 times over the last 9 years and on each occasion I have to say it was cold, particularly as each visit was in November!! I personally do not rate Dunedin highly. Yes it has some fine buildings and a great peninsular, but generally it did not inspire me.

My mother lives an hour south of Dunedin and it is a fact that the winters are cold down there. On South Island I prefer Chistchurch and may consider this area of NZ when we emigrate early next year. However we are looking for warmer weather than in the UK, so at the moment it looks like North Island and we are looking at the Waikato area south east of Hamilton.

The important thing to remember about NZ is that central heating and double glazing are not common, even on South Island. I can tell you that my mother's house can be very very cold even in November.

Responding to your question regarding Dunedin. I will hopefully be issued my visa in the next 48 hours. My target destination is Mosgiel which is a wee town outside Dunedin. Apparentley Dunedin is very Scottish in its basis and Dunedin means Edinborough or something like that. I am a specialist plasterer and to be honest I signed for the first and only company I spoke to. I am a little concerned to read about the cold weather, but it looks like a quiet tranquil place to raise my small child and semi retire.

Though it is home to rare penguins, an important point in anyone's relocation priorities.
