Hi,
My eldest has decided that she would like to train as a hairdresser, If we were staying here, she would do it through a good local salon. Please can anyone point us towards info on the training routes available in NZ? I seem to remember that some people on this forum are hairdressers...

I know there's hairdressing schools in Auckland (my friend's sister trained at one of them years ago - she used me as a guinea pig for her perming exam - never again!!!!http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/verkleidung/costumed-smiley-026.gif :eek: )

When I lived in christchcrch many moons ago ....

There was a hairdressing training place - I think although dont quote me it was called reuben blades

I have seriously been considering gong to the training place before I end up like rapunzel. But the hairdressers is like visiting the dentist for me. :uhoh

Hi my wife goes to Winters so I'll let her respond to this post :)

Hi, I am currently studying at Winters in Auckland.The course lasts for 8 months, the fees for international students is $16,700. The certificate is level 3,then you will need to work in a salon and attend course to gain further qualifications in order to be a fully qualified hairdresser. On finishing the 8 month course you'll be an apprentice,you do need further qualifications.HOWEVER, the certificate is recognised worldwide;unlike the other places one can study hairdressing in Auckland! The qualification is called pivot point,this is a method of learning that involves watching laser discs of demonstrations of how to do everything also a lot of theory work is involved, so many tests and exams,daily and weekly tests!! I have been on the course since last september, I'm hoping to qualify this may. One aspect of the course I find hard is finding models to take in for practical evidence gathering every friday.During the week we use dolly heads called mannequins, they have real hair,we cut colour blow wave,put in rollers etc. I have no female friends or family over here,so far my hubby has been getting hair colour.Students have to go out onto the main st in Auckland,Queen st, and stop women and ask them to be their models,I'm upset at having to do that, I find it too difficult,others are ok about it,guess its just me!! The tutors are all very good,helpful etc,I don't want to encourage anyone into attending Winters,and I don't gain a thing by saying any of this;I just want others to be in charge of the facts before committing to any expensive course.I have met girls who have been ripped off by some hairdressing places in Auckland,Winters is not one those places.Its up to the individual,but,please be advised,its hard work mentally as well as physically;some days I feel I'm in over my head.The immigration dept says hairdressing is not on the short list here?but,with this qualification you can work anywhere,thats the good thing.
