Kiwibank emailed me a remote account opening pack just now, (it's pretty large, it includes all the application forms, Terms & Conditions, transaction fees, etc, basically everything you'll need to open the account from overseas). If anyone wants a copy please email/pm me and I'll get it over to you.

Any idea what min opening balance would be?

They don't have a min opening balance for remote accounts, but you have to pay in $50 when you arrive at the branch to do the rest of the admin.

Is the information that they've sent you any different from what you can get on the web site? I downloaded the migrant banking forms and agreements from this web site: http://www.kiwibank.co.nz/products/migrant_banking_open_acc.stm
I'm a little confused about filling out the forms. I understand that I can get an IRD # just by applying from overseas - but do I need one to open the account? Obviously I don't know what my NZ tax rate is / would be.

thanks dawn, but I read that you needed Utility bills no older than 3 mths.....we sold up in Feb....bills are a thing of the past....other than paying half of the leccy and gas to my inlaws................and on that note.....kids turn the heating down...(would you believe the gas bill was £180!) I nearly fell off my chair!

appreciate your input to wether this will be a problem...

Kat - If you sold up in Feb, you will still have a final bill (already or coming), so you could send them that.

Torontokiwi - You get that form and a few more, plus some brochures (I can send them to you if you pm me your email address), you don't need an IRD number to open the account, you can supply that at a later date.

I'm in a hurry so I switched to Westpac. The process for opening an account was clearer and there was a telephone number that I could call.

I spoke to Brenda in Auckland and she was really helpful. I'm going to fax her my application on Monday and she said that a few days later they should be able to send me an account number along with instructions for transferring money.

It's a bit challenging to fill in my Canadian address on both the KiwiBank and Westpac Migrant Banking Account Application forms. They might want to rethink their form design.
