I've got the kids provisionally registered in schools, Lewis is 13 and Sam will be 12 by the time we go.

I know that the school year runs January to December, but when are the breaks in between?

We should arrive in July (around 20th) and if I've got this right, they should be going back to school after the "winter" break sometime early August? I can't find this information on the school's website and they weren't very forthcoming. I'd like the kids to have at least a couple of weeks off to aclimatise, get over jet-lag, etc.

Thanks in advance.

hi
School holidays etc are all listed on the Ministry of Education website.

(I tried to copy & paste for you but it wouldn't format properly, hope the link works.)

The link worked perfectly thanks! And I got it wrong, they'll be 3 days into the new term when we arrive :( So the boys won't have as long to acclimatise as I thought.

Dawn we also arrived end of July (2004) Our son who is now 8 couldn't wait to get to school we were also going to give him a few weeks off but he just wanted to get to his new school and make new friends. We arrived on a Saturday morning and he wanted to go to school on Monday, we managed to keep him away for a week!

Lucky you, getting them into school so early. We arrive in Christchurch on 6 March, but because we can't get into our rental in Sumner until 11 April (which is the start of the Easter hols), they won't be starting until 26 April!! They'll finish here on 17 Feb - that's over 2 months!! What on earth are we going to do with them?? We'll be climbing the walls!!

Dawn - They're 6 and 8 (girls). I've also got a 4 month old baby boy, but I think I might have to wait a wee while before I can get him off to school!!

Can't send them off tramping (walking up the mountains) just yet either. My sister-in-law lives in Christchurch, I'll ask her what's around there for the kids to do in the holidays, maybe they have summer play groups or something.

Thanks, Dawn. That would be much appreciated. They're going to have a visit at the school in March, and the Principal is going to let them know in advance what they'll be studying after Easter, just so that they can do a bit of reading and give them a bit of structure to the days while they're waiting to start.

I think your boys will probably be glad to be going straight to school - I'd send the girls straightaway if I could!

Hi Chilly,

I just rang the school, gave them our approximate dates and they sent me an email confirming a provisional place. They said that we should ring when we arrive and go for a visit, get the kids registered fully and hey presto, they can then start school.

Marie, your 13 year old will go to High School, my eldest son was born in 1993 and he's High School age. My other son is 1994 and he's last year of Intermediate (Sam will only be at Intermediate from August - December, hardly seems worth it, buying uniform, etc.).

Hope this helps.

Hi all, my youngest will have finished his GCSE's (Hopefully with good results - as he has the brains - but as a typical teenage boy finds school totally Boring :wah )

Has anyone got kids of this age and any advise on how to get him on the university path (hes into science, maths etc) not practical at all!

unlike his dad and elder bro!
