Hi,
When we arrive in Auckland we will have to get a hire car to drive down to Tauranga, Is it best to get one when we arrive ? or book over web.

The only problem seems to be that you need a valid credit card when you get there, but surley you have to cancel your cards before you leave.

Any help please,

Alan.

I don't see why you need to cancel cards before you leave. I still plan on keeping a US bank account open and that account has a CC with it. It will not be our primary account but I figure it will come in handy at times.

Cant comment on the credit card issue, but I would say wait till you get there to hire a car, as you can shop around and haggle. We booked from the uk for a recent trip, and found that we could have saved a fair amount had we waited.

All I was thinking is I won't have an address for the statement to be posted to.

Hi,

I'm planning on keeping my c/cards going and bank accounts - you can always get an international redirection from the post office from your old address :yes

Or if you've got family you could use their address...

Best regards

I`ve still got a UK bank account & credit cards and I`ve been here in NZ for 3 months or so. Statements etc go my parents address and I keep a check via internet.

i do know citibank is international, so i can use my manila-based credit card and i will be billed in pesos. (or so i understand from all their hyped-up marketing calls!) dont let go of visa or mastercard yet. could come in handy, and you can just wire money to whoever is left behind in uk to pay your bills (which will be lower, now that youre in nz) :laugh

and you can always have your statements sent through your email address, no need for bulky envelopes (adds to the pack rat image hehehe)

:cheers

Hey Alan

Don't know whether you've tried these folks or not but it may be worth giving them a call.

A company called Breakaway NZ. www.breakaway.co.nz

They're nothing flash but hire out good sound basic cars, (not rent-a-wreck). You can book over the internet and they will collect you from the airport and take you round to the depot to pick up the car. We've hired from these people on more than one occasion and have found them to be really good. They seem to be alot cheaper than most hire companies as the cars are slightly older models, but by no means old cranks.

Hope this helps.
