I'm hanging out with my doggy, just released from quarantine, at a holiday park ($12 a night, can't beat it!) waiting for the sleepervan I just bought to be "groomed" and go through the dealer's final servicing. In a couple of days, I'll be off to Akaroa and then points south. Woo-hoo!
Either I've been looking at RealENZ too much or Christchurch bears a striking resemblance to California. Things -- except for the road signs and the driving on the left thing -- don't seem "foreign." Freaky.
Christchurch is gorgeous and a lot bigger than I expected. Silas, my doggy, was sooo happy to see me. A little bit of initial separation anxiety, but that's gone away in the couple of days since I've been here.

Cool, just got back online today. I've lost all track of time. I just checked out of North South Holiday Park, which has great owners, nice amenities, borderline location -- unless you grew up next to the highway and under a major airport's flight path, which, luckily, I did (who knew that my lower middle class upbringing would come in handy).
I set up the tent next to the duck pond, which was completely charming. It made me miss my duckies something fierce.
I'm headed off to Akaroa now, but have to come back to ChCh to pick up my car registration next week. When back in ChCh, I'll probably stay at a holiday park in a different part of the city -- South Brighton or thereabouts sounds good, gotta check their dog policy.
All the best,
Laura

Hi Sweatpea,
Friends of ours own the South Brighton Holiday Park - dogs aren't usually allowed but they do let us in with Summer so you never know - drop me a PM if you're interested. It's a really lovely motor park right on the estuary :nice1
Good to see you're having fun, make sure you get fish and chips near the pier in Akaroa ;)

As I said, double check re dogs, the previous owner had a dog and they've allowed u on the site with Summer (but we were there as visiting friends, not customers). It's officially a "no dog" site.
The owners are Dom and Lyn and they are a lovely Brit couple who took it over last year....

Christchurch reminded me of northern california for some reason. The highway down the coast to Kaikura reminded me of what the "Rincon" (coastal highway between Ventura and Santa Barbara) might have been back in the 50's. Marlborough reminded me of where I grew up in Southern California.

We just got back from touring NZ for 7 weeks...and we loved ChCh.
I have to say that many, many areas of NZ reminded me of California...only a California that maybe doesn't exist anymore (?).
I'm looking forward to talking with you more about ChCh as we are planning to move there this year.
Congratulations!
