Hi all,
Just a quick couple of questions.
Any suggestions which newspapers Andy could be getting when he gets to Christchurch on Saturday. Looking for IT job ads. Also, do they come out certain days in the week / month?
When completing forms with job agencies etc we keep coming across the question 'What salary would you accept' - very difficult for us to answer as we have no idea at the moment what an 'acceptable' salary would be for an IT Project Manager. Anybody got any thoughts? Tricky one I know, but just trying to get an idea for him, for when this comes up in mtgs next week :hopeso
Thanks a bunch :nice1

The Press on Wednesdays and Thursdays - but we haven't seen many IT jobs in the papers here (Chch) AT ALL.
I've said in a couple of other threads - Warren had a meeting with the IT recruiter from Brannigans in Chch yesterday (Mon) and even he said that IT firms were not using agencies and that most of it was a case of approaching companies direct with your CV and networking.
If he is due out there soon I would urge him to contact some companies direct and get meetings set up in advance, especially if he has a limited amount of time here ....
Check out a directory of IT employers on the Canterbury Software Cluster website http://canterburysoftware.org.nz/directory
As for salary - well how long is a piece if string I'm afraid - depends on size of company, their salary grades, his skills, industry area etc. I've seen some co.s offer 95k and some offer 35k !!
On reading that post back it doesn't sound too positive I'm afraid, but that is the situation as we see it at present.

Thanks Helen,
Reality isn't always nice, but it's what we need at the moment.
He's due to attend the Canterbury Software forum on Wed 20/10. I'll pass the rest of your note to him.
Has a number of mtgs set up with agencies and employers, but will need to do some more in the next few days.
Thanks again :nice1

Hoi Babette,
Is Andy going to Welly aswell? Overhere most companies and government do use recruitment agencies so it seems to be a very different market. But then there are more IT jobs here and Auckland I think.
As far as I can gather 80k is a reasonable salary for a project manager but more than that is certainly attainable.
Veel succes!

Hoi Miep,
At the moment he's only planning to go to ChCh, simply because we are really keen on moving to the Canterbury region, for many reasons. Auckland doesn't really interest us, but Wellington may be an option.
He does have a few gaps in his schedule, and we have been speaking with a number of agencies in Well already, so maybe he will fly out for a day.
What are you guys doing there? Got to go now, will post again soon.
Thanks for the advise :nice1

Again, from info from IT recruiters, it does seem that Chch is more of a software developers hub so perhaps Welly and Auckland should also be on his itinerary. Having said that, perhaps salary would go further down here than in Welly and Auckland? It's a juggling act.....

There are quite a few ads for IT project managers here in Welly, both in the paper and on the seek website. I think Telecom also advertised recently for a project manager (I've signed up to their careers section and get emails if anything suitable comes up - might be worth doing...)
Here in Welly it seems that IT Project Managers can get anywhere between about $60 and $90k, and their also on the POL which is always good for work permit/residency applications!
Hope this helps,
Jodie

Thanks for that Jodie & Helen,
Andy read through the threads last night and we mailed a number of additional companies, have to wait and see what comes back.
We may have to consider Welly more seriously, but we're totally smitten with Christchurch!
Not much more I/we can do at this stage as he flies out at 10am tomorrow morning.
Will keep you updated.
Thanks again :cheers

Hiya,
Just to add my twopenny worth; I'm living in Wellington, working in IT and I love it. A fair number of the jobs here in Wellington tend to be Government jobs for obvious reasons. It may be worth checking out http://www.jobs.govt.nz
As to Wellington vs Chch, I think that's really a personal choice. I've spent a bit of time in ChCh and like it too.
Good luck, whatever,
Evelynne

Thanks all, for suggestions and good luck wishes :P
Spoke with Andy this morning, safely arrived in Chch and trying to get over the jetlag :wah
Great accommodation, and ready to start exploring tomorrow.
I've asked him to post his own update on the site, so hopefully he'll figure out how to do this . . . :hopeso
