IRD Number

Anyone have any insights on IRD number?

I have looked at the application online. It would like a New Zealand address, which of course I won't have a proper one for awhile.
Is it okay to put my "work address" and send in a change of address notice at a later date?

My husband wants me to take care of this now, before I get to NZ.
I'm wondering if it's easier just to do it when I arrive.

The husband wants to set up a bank account prior to arrival so we can buy a vehicle the first week. etc. I think you need the IRD to get the bank account.

Any insight would be appreciated.
Thans!

You can get an IRD number from the UK, there should be an application form on their website somewhere, I'll see if I can find it for you.

You definitely don't need IRD to get a bank account, but you do need IRD to get paid!! (So they don't tax you at an extortionate rate)

Got it http://www.ird.govt.nz/nonresidents/

http://www.ird.govt.nz/how-to/irdnumbers/

It says:

You will need to provide a photocopy of one of the following documents as identification:

Birth certificate
Current New Zealand passport
Current New Zealand 18+ card
Current overseas passport
Certificate of New Zealand citizenship
Current New Zealand photo driver licence
Certificate of identity issued by the New Zealand Immigration Service

So as long as you have a passport or birth certificate, you should be fine.

Here's the form http://www.ird.govt.nz/resources/file/eb78c64eff73729/ir595.pdf

It is very common for people to use their work address. I did and they didn't mind. Just don't forget to ring them and update it when you find a permanent home address.

Yeah, you can always get the IRD number with your current home address (even in UK or else). Mine was shipped to US with no problem before we left to NZ.

Hi

I was wondering about this as well so thanks for the links. Just a quick question, in order to get the IRD nubmer whilst still being overseas, would I need to have a definite job offer or already have PR granted?

I guess so for the latter but I was just wondering if anyone knew?

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers
Brendan

Actually, you don't need either, you can apply for an IRD with an overseas passport.

So on the form where it says NZ address I can put in my UK one and all will be well?

Sorry, I'm just a bit slow and weary after trying to fill in an EoI for my family of six.

Actually I'm just slow - no excuses!

Btw it takes about 2 weeks for them to process your application.

I am glad to hear you are getting your IRD before you arrive. I waited until I got a flat and a job and my first check took a big hit. It only takes 2 weeks to get an IRD but they taked my check like 40%. Ouch!

The bank account is not such a big deal in fact I am glad I waited. The exchange rate has been moving in favor of the US dollar.

I just found out if you need an IRD number in a rush, call the 0800 number to get local fax number. Fax application, copy of passport, your phone number, and covering letter explaining why you need it rushed. They called the next day with my number :)

We waited till we got here, which in hindsight was stoopid...Karen should have been earning $60,000 but was put on a ridiculous $25,000 and taxed $1 for every $2...urgh! This is still being sorted out, along with problems with NZQA which we thought was all sorted...honestly they don't make things easy for emigrating teachers... :(

We phoned the 0800 number and they sorted us out after about 3 weeks being here, so I guess the moral of the story is get your IRD before you get to NZ...

Sorted out IRD when we got here, sent off the forms, Andy was starting a job so I rang them up and they gave us a number cards there in 2 weeks.

If starting a job first few days you arrive apply before otherwise it is not too big a problem.

Give the number to your bank as it is used on the tax on your savings.

re transferring money, we are using a currency exchange co, tracking it, not one of the major ones, if you want details, email me (don't get here much anymore). still doing money transfers now, bringing what we need as we need it until the exchange rate is sweet 2.7 yesterday.

If you apply for an IRD Number from the UK which address do you send it to?

The form lists loads of addresses (well 4) depending on which bit of NZ you live in.

Thoughts/experiences appreciated.

Yogi.

When I applied from the UK, I just sent it to the office nearest to where I would be living... as that happened to be Wellington it wasn't a hard choice. :D

I applied for an IRD number using my UK address, as we don't leave till the 8th of April, and it was back within a fortnight. means that when we start working our tax is taken at 19% rather than 39%!!!!!!
