I bought this book today, so if anyone needs any pet friendly motels or ideas on where to exercise your dog, lots of great info in there.
North & South Island included.

Excellent Dawn!
Our boy Harvey will be staying with my sister until we find somewhere pet friendly to rent so I may have to give you a shout later on.
Many thanks

That ought to be useful -- it's like pulling hen's teeth to find dog-friendly holiday parks! For future reference, these are dog-friendly: North South (ChCh), Purau Bay (ChCh), Fairlie Top 10 -- really nice park by the way --, Lake Ruawhenia (sp?), Dunedin, Portobello Village. I had no luck finding any dog-friendly campgrounds around Alexandra, Q-town or Wanaka. Thank God for free camping and DOC's informal sites!
The AA Accomodation Guides do have a "Pets by arrangement" icon that is shown for each property they list, but that's not always reliable. It seems, too, that places will not accept pets during their busy times. And always, you'll get the "What kind of dog is it?" which leads me to believe that if you have certain breeds of dogs, you're out of luck altogether.

Right at the beginning of the book, there's a statement:
While the accommodation outlets advertised in this book are sympathetic to pet owners, the majority advertise pets by arrangement . Some places have detailed policies for people bringing pets, which are available to you when booking. If you wish to take your pet, please contact the outlet before you arrive. Proprietors always have the right of refusal and many do not appreciate your turning up with a pet they did not know was coming.
This is an example of one of the listings:
The Motel will accept well-behaved dogs and cats by arrangement. No aggressive breeds. We live in an urban area so no excessive barking please. Pets to have vaccination certificate. Small dogs are allowed inside, but not on the beds. A carport is out the back with walls on 3 sides providing shelter for larger dogs. The section is fenced and safe and we ask you to clean up after your dog.

Thanks Dawn,
I'll have to look into that book. (still haven't got around to posting pic of my dog for you, ive had the dreaded flu).
I don't fancy having to leave him outside in a strange place though! He is as daft as a brush and although he would guard his home and sit on anyone who came near the kids, put somewhere he has no attachment to and he would wander off with anyone for a sausage. Emotions aside, he is also quite valuable to leave out on his own.
I'm starting to worry that the dog is going to be the hardest part of all of this to arrange. We are going to have to get him from Auckland to where ever we end up as he is to large to fly into elsewhere.

Hey Debbie,
Sorry to hear you've not been well.
That example above was just one of them , lots of them allow the dogs indoors, you'll have to look through and choose the motel that meets all your requirements.
We've got the same problem, Hux is too big to fly to Wellington which would've been perfect for us, so we're having to stay over night for an extra night in Auckland.
We're hiring a small car for the first day and will pick up our Mitsubishi Challenger on day 2, so we will have means of transport for him down to Masterton, otherwise, we'd have been stuck!
Good luck.
Dawn
