Hope somebody in the Accounts / Payroll trade can help with this one.
My Wife is a Payroll Supervisor here in the UK. When we get over to NZ she will eventually look for a job within a payroll enviroment over there.
As she is a supervisor she is very clued up on UK tax / NI / SSP and various forms of Payroll software etc. I'll let here explain if anyone asks details cos I really do not understand it.
Her question really is about learning NZ tax, Sick pay, NI, and anything regarding payroll methods over there. This way she can get a jist before she lines up any interviews etc.
Does anybody know of anyone who can help?

Hi Rimbo hope you're well.
Andy is meeting up with an ex-pat from Stoke when he's in ChCh next week. He works for KPMG, specialising in NZ Tax issues and moved to Christchurch in Aug02.
Let's see how they get on, so far only 'talked' via e-mail, but he seems really nice and has passed Andy's CV on to a colleague of his. If all goes well I'll ask Andy to mention your note to him (Jonathan), whilst he's there if he remembers or else via e-mail when he's back. It would probably be best if your wife (sorry forgot her name) speaks directly with Jonathan after that.
If you don't hear anything from us, send us a quick reminder when Andy gets back on the 24th
Cheers

Message for Jonathan -
Andy's mentioned that you've now joined this forum too (sorry don't know what name you've registered under).
Are you able to assist John (alias Rimbo) and his wife?
Cheers

Hi I do accounts and Payroll but am by no means an expert MOST companies here use MYOB which is annoying because I am used to the sage software, but once you have used one accounts package it doesn't take too long to pick up on others.
I agree with Timbo the best way og getting to grips with the NZ law is the IRD website.
Good Luck ;)

I'm the Jonathan discussed in previous emails with Babette and Andy.
Payroll software etc are basically going to be the same sorts of things as you get in the UK. Its just a matter of learning how the package works. One of the big uppercoming packages in NZ is Payglobal. I would suggest she does a search and have a look at their website. This package is alot more than just a payroll package it handles HR issues aswell I believe.
Things to bear in mind from a payroll perspective.
1. No National insurance, ACC instead
2. No tax free allowances
3. Tax rates 19.5 %(0 - $38,000) 33% ($38001 - $60,000) and 39% above
4. Employees taxed on a month 1 basis (she'll know what that means) Wages effectively annualised and taxed at appropriate rates. Leads to possibility of tax refunds in your first year. (IRD don't tell you about it)
You need to know anything else, give us a shout.
Cheers
