Have now stayed at the BK Pioneer Motor Lodge twice and would highly recommend it to anybody.

It's very close to the airport, they have a shuttle which will come and collect you. The rooms are VERY clean, modern and spacious. We stayed there on New Years Eve when Mum & Dad arrived - they loved it too.

Above all - it's pretty resonably priced !!!

I'd say 'stay there'.

Hi, I cant help you with motels but I can recommend an agent for renting
Crockers (http://www.crockers.co.nz) found them to be ok if anything wrong with the house they are quick on repairs.

When we arrived we stayed at Quay West suites in CBD fr 6 weeks. I did a deal with owner for $750 a week. Two bed apartment fuuly loaded in 5* hotel with pool and gym. Made life alot less stressful. Alot nicer and better than paying $150 a night for motel.

Here is the website for MANZ which is a motel association of NZ. A motel that has that usually is of decent quality although might be a little more expensive.

Auckland is in this list as well as the rest of the country. I found it very useful. We spent 6 weeks in NZ staying in nothing but MANZ motels and all were grand.

Don't know whether you're sorted already or not, but we're currently staying at the Howick Motor Lodge in (you guessed it) Howick. Comfortable family room on split level (our kids are 6 & 3), fine for a couple of weeks. Owners Mandy & Dave are ex-pats too. Reasonably priced. Hope this is of some use.

We booked somewhere for a couple of weeks, but it was no way near long enough for sorting out a suitable rental. (We were however looking in a very popular area and for a 3 bed.).

So I would definitely agree with 'upandrunning', on the idea of booking a holidayhome for about 4-6 weeks, or make sure its a motel where you extend your stay if necessary (ie one with plenty of rooms).

We never found a rental in the end, turned out that it was easier to buy!
