HI Vic
We had a massive Koi pond in UK couldn't believe that we weren't able to have one here :( I can't say that I have seen any ponds in gardens here.
Trying to convince hubby that gold fish would be okay, not quiet the same though

Hi Tara
We were gutted to not be able to have our beloved koi pond - & then we were even more gutted when we realised that they actually shoot them as pests in the north island . YIKES :wah we pay big money here in the uk for something thats vermin in NZ - crazy crazy world we live in .
Its been a lovely mild day here in sunny Leyland ,Lancashire & I've been out & about in the garden doing some tidying - All the pond fish seemed very active & kept following us around the decking begging for food . We've quite a big pond here too about 5m x 4 m & around 4 ' deep . The daff's are just peeking through so spring is definitly in the air ....... roll on the estate agent !!

Hi Vic
We paid upto 300 pounds for some of our fish and guess what! We had to give them away when we moved :wah :wah
Never mind I couldn't fit my two horses that I have now in my garden in the UK can't have everything! My horses are beautifull we love it here and wouldn't change a thing.
Where in NZ are you planning on moving too?
Weather is great here too sat at my desk (I'm at work) looking out towards the mountains not a cloud in sight and its really hot outside too can't wait to get home.

You're right Tara, it IS hot, sat at home, checked outside thermometer earlier and it was already 33 degs.... a couple of :cheers on the deck methinks... (ps got your invite, we'll be there ;) )
Regarding ponds, our neighbour has a pretty big one, with goldfish that she breeds and exchanges for food in the pet shop, and there are at least 2 other ponds I know of in the village. Never knew that about Koi in NZ!! Can you export them :D

Please explain? I had to give all my fish away when we sold our house here, I was looking forward to designing a new pond when we bought a house in NZ?

pond fish .........
I've tried & tried but all I seem to be able to find is goldfish - admittedly its very hard to find fish & pond & garden stuff generally on line in NZ . From what I can see garden ponds are'nt such a big thing in NZ as they are here in the UK . We have several really large orfe which i love too & they dont seem to feature in NZ at all .
I couldn't beleive it when I read about the koi - I'll try to find the page & add the link - was glad to read that they capture the best ones & export them - seems stange that something we pay £££££££ for is considerd a pest & shot !!
Perhaps we should start a NZ water gardening club ???
Tara - we are moving back to Ch Ch - I lived there from 1973 - 1990 , I'd a school mate who lived in Kaiapoi & my brother used to work there . I used to ride as a child/ teenager - we used to trek (read bomb about !!!) where they've built westmorland - I learned & generally hung about grooming & mucking out for free rides at what was thornton grange in Halswell - I think thats a housing estate now too !!

Vic
We are living out at Ashley and I have 2 horses one a 16 year old who spooks a lot but is generally bomb proof and the other an ex pacer 8 year old that has never been ridden in saddle I am breaking him slowly and he is absolutey gorgeous.
You are more than welcome to come and visit when you get here.
Back to my pond, we advertised the fish as the new owners of the house didn't want them, but no one was willing to buy them so we just had to find someone that was willing to rehome them and gave them away. We just wanted a good home for them.

yes mate at work always says if i have some spare trout that he will have them as bait/burly. most of the trout i catch go back except a few for friends who eat them, personally i dont like them, tasteless unless smoked and to many bones. I am partial to a bit of john dory though. :nice1

Hi Everyone,
just a note to all those coarse fishermen out there, dont despair , this one is for you , lets say its one for the boys.
As you may or not know Koi in Nz are considered a pest , but the Waikato river and that particular area , are full of them ,as far south as Hamilton .I have been here about 8 months now , and have found some really good places to fish . But the real point is as far as fishing for Koi , nobody knows how many,or how big the fish in some of the lakes or rivers are , mainly because there are very few people who bother to fish for them . I myself have seen fish in the Waikato at Mercer , under a road bridge well in excess of 30lb , may be bigger , and I am at the moment following up on a tip of a 50lb , yes 50lb, Koi from a lake in the Waikato area.So i would strongly urge anyone who is coming over, not to get rid of any of your tackle , keep everything , there is very little available in NZ ,so dont overlook the smallest thing .Put it another way could you imagine as a carp fisherman , going to a lake where nobody fishes , with the prospect of a 50lb carp , Koi or not , nobody is going to pass on that one . I must be in heaven , i think I am .

I fish Lake Ngaroto, and have been told there are a few biggies in there,so Mr P, would, or could this be the lake you are talking about. This place also produce's some lovely coloured Rudd and Hybrid's.
