After a visit to a Wellington junior swimming competition this weekend, and a swift cuppa with Deborah (Smiler) in between races, I have been thinking about the wind in Wellington. Deborah mentioned some of the things that had been blown into her garden since she arrived there - if i remember right they included a VERY LARGE panama hat, some towels, a barbeque lid (?) and other things.

Just for a bit of fun, i thought it would be interesting to start up a thread that asks people to list the bizarre objects that have landed in their garden in Wellington (or other windy parts of NZ) following a windy day.

Also if anyone finds a set of blue speedo trunks and a blue and white stipey towel, which departed from the washing line outside our motel room, please PM me!!! A large brown hairclip, a small orange picnic plate and a grubby tea towel also departed from our decking and is blowing around in a garden near you!!!

PS did anyone else in Wellington see the two big bush fires in the hills on Saturday night? Is that common!!??

Hi Hannah - yes I saw them . We were coming home from Petone - they were really raging!
No I would say that isn't common.

Did you read what I posted the other day about a newspaper being blown out of a mail box and hitting me on the head while I was out walking?
It gave me the shock of my life!! :laugh

I actually dont think the wind is that bad.......maybe I've just got used to it.
Been in windier spots...

Hi Hannah

This made me laugh! However, I hope it wasn't the new speedo's that vanished.:wah

So far we have had

1 3ft new sombrero hat (no mexican with it)

1 red bucket minus handle
1 yellow bucket complete with handle :clap

A large blue bedsheet (yuk)

A massive BBQ lid (and we are just waiting for the rest of it to come whizzing by) I phoned the rental agent about this because I thought it was part of the roof, it was so big. Had them in stitches.

Ouch to the newspaper though Carol :uhoh

Hannah - as you probably know, there's a London-based radio presenter called Danny Baker whose whole show pretty much revolves around excellent niche topics like this one. (Among his very many own efforts are "What superstitions are unique to your family?" and "Have you ever had to fake an accent, and why?")

If you ever fancy a break from New Plymouth you could probably get a job on his production team.

What a wonderful thread.

And anyone who wants more of this sort of thing can listen to Danny 3-5pm London time, weekdays, on BBC London 94.9 (available over the Internet, too).

Off topic a bit, but seeing the original post and the word "Speedos" reminded of a term they have for swimming trunks in this part of the world - Budgie Smugglers! Sorry, can't help, everytime I think of this it has me in fits of laughter.

I guess it is meant to describe the shape the, erm, relevant appendage makes in such stretchy fabric. Personally I can't say I have ever smothered a (real) budgie in lycra, guess I am just not the adventurous type.
