I had it all down pat in March but then we gave up because the points were so high! And now we've been selected from the pool and I've tried searching the forums but this is so basic nobody asks it!
We were going to try "investor" then but gave up because the us dollar was so low. Now I've confused SMC/Investor rules and thus the answers to these qs:

on SMC we're likely to get residence track?
can spouse also work right away, if principal app is one providing work experience?
does principal app have to work only in profession in which experienced?
if spouse can't work in first 2-3 years, only after?
and is this no free healthcare for family if we come in through SMC track? I thinking we'd have to get a policy for the years before residence.

I guess I've forgotten it all! If anyone can point me to the basic thread again I'd appreciate it. I thought I'd read it here then.

Bit confused about some of wat you are askig but here goes!

If you are successful under SMC you will get PR.

If the principal applicant gets PR then the partner/spouse will too.

The partners visa is unrestricted and they acn get a job anywhere doing anything....provided they pay their taxes! :laugh

Principal applicants work experience should relate to the qualifications for which points have been claimed.

When granted the PR visa may have 18a restrictions imposed, which mean you have to stay with your employer for at least 3 months....after that you are a free agent!

There is free healthcare for children but the system here is a user pays one and it is sensible to have some health insurance in place to cover your family.

It is also advisable to have income protection insurance if only one of you is working. UYou wont qualify for sick leave until you have built up some service with the employer.

Hiya,

Just to add my tuppence worth to Karl's excellent analysis.

From what you've said, I'm assuming you don't have a job in NZ. In that case, my understanding is you don't get PR straight away - you and your partner get a two-year open work visa. Once you've been in skilled employment for three months, you can convert that to PR.

Good luck,

Evelynne
