Just checked online and my work permit and visa were approved today! (No need for congrats though, as I have never really even properly introduced myself :o ).

There was one snag though- the expiry date is 18 Sept 2006... I requested for September 2007. It's an arbitrary time length from today- 7mos 1 week and 3 days. My passport expires 20 Dec 2008. 18 Sept 2006 would make it 3 months exactly before my passport WOULD expire if they missread the 2008 for 2006. Just an idea.

I am already in the country now on a visitor's visa, if it makes a difference.

- Has anyone gotten approved for a permit/visa, but did not get the date they requested? Do they give you a reason?

-Can you apply for an extension for a work permit/visa, or do you have to completely reapply?

Don't know what to think right now... definitely good news, but as I am getting married (in NZ) on November 18, 2006, it is causing me a bit of concern. Thanks for any comments.

Do you have a work contract or employment contract that ends in Sept 2006? I know that they gave initial work visa to Woz for the exact time period of his contract at that time.

My visa was issued on the 14th December 04, but runs until the 15th Feb 07. I may re-apply for a continuation of it though before it runs out. I wasn't under the impression you could request dates. I thought as soon as you submitted the application it was in the lap of NZIS to which day they'd issue it, and that would give you your dates when to enter and when to leave.

Thanks for the help, guys... The work contract was indefinite in length.

The Work Permit/Visa app asks you in Q A25 "This is the date I request my work permit to be current to". Mabye this is a new question this year or something...

I will ring NZIS and see what my options are... again, thanks for the advice

Just FYI for anyone in the same situation as above...

I spoke with NZIS and they said that event though a Work Visa/Permit does not explicitly REQUIRE a 12-month continuous, co-habitated relationship, they are looking for that number. If you seem to have a genuine relationship, they will grant you the inital visa often for just long enough for you to have been in a partnership for 12-months.

NZIS recommended I use the visa to give more concrete evidence (i.e. the joint bank accts, tenantcy agreements, etc) and reapply before the permit expires. The second application does not require a medical or police cert if you have already have submitted one under the current visa, and her impression was that as long as you have new evidence of some sort, they will then just rubber-stamp you for 2-3 years. Makes sense I suppose!
