Hello whats included in the rent in NZ ? do you still have to pay rates, gas ,electric ,water bills etc, Also as it seems to be solid fuel heating everywhere i,ve looked so far,can you have your fuel delivered in bulk (like coal man in UK) or not? How quick can you usually move in from viewing a house.
Thanks Bev and paul :nice1

We moved in same day.

Rent and rates is included in ours. Leccy paid for monthly by us. We don't pay for water but can't find anywhere that is says it is included on our rent

You can have wood delivered by the trailer load not sure about coal, but Moorf was having some problems getting it delivered by the coalman because it isn't cold enough!

Thats how it is for us and it was really easy once we decided on a rental.

thanks for that weve only booked hotel for 14 days i was hoping that would be enough and it looks like it will. Weve been in touch with school they seem really nice and helpful. One more question ? what about dentists do you have to register like England and is it subsidised or is it best to take out insurance.
Thanks Paul and Bev

We only had a place booked for 6 days, so although time was of the essence, we would have booked into a motel if needed but we found we didn't.

I planned where we were going house hunting, phoned in advance or did drivebys first. We saw this and it was really over our budget but we kept coming back to it, (literally it was empty and we could get round the back, so didn't need to keep calling the agent) and we compared notes all the time.

It was important to us to get settled as we run our own business and could not do that from internet cafes but we would have taken longer, I just don't think you'll need to.

Dentists, whilst there are loads of radio adverts for them I haven't booked cause I'm a woos. :uhoh So I'm clueless there. From some adverts, a check up is $40-50.

Don't know if it is the same everywhere but both my kids have a dentist at the school they go to which we registered them with when they first started school. My daughter wouldn't let the school dentist do any work on her (wouldn't even open her mouth) so the school dentist refferred her to a 'childrens' dentist that gave her a bit of the 'happy stuff'. Didn't have to pay for any of this. Now she is getting used to the dentists she opens her mouth no probs!

Dentists for us 'grown ups', well you just find one you want to go to and register with them. Gotta say we have been impressed all round with the dentists here (apart from the bill of course) :(

Thanks for all the info everybody. Weve been hearing horror stories about landlords not wanting to return bonds . Have any of you guys/gals had this problem? :wah

No not yet ;)

Some one may correct me if I'm wrong but rental agencies are required to lodge the bond with these people. I think the same applies to private landlords though, anyone?

http://www.govt.nz/record?tid=3&treeid=1&recordid=1177

About 3 weeks after we paid our bond, we got a letter telling us the bond was lodged with them.

There are lots of things about rentals and tenancies on that site that might help you. We used the pro forma letters to get our landlord to do a couple of things they kept promising to do and they dragged their heels. When they got the letter, they were round like a shot!:clap

Yep, we have rented twice through private landlords and they are still required to lodge the bond trough them

Property info from agents will include a 'available from' date - that's when you can move into the property. Properties we looked at varied from a couple of days, to 6 weeks in the future. We basically struck anything from our list that was too far in the future as we didn't want to pay for a motel, but it was hard going to sort through all the dross to find soemthing in time - and we ended up living in our tent for a week before we could get into the rental (we turned it into a holiday in Central Otago so it worked out fine!).

Rates are paid by the property owner, not the tenant.
Electricity paid by the tenant.
Water charges are only paid seperately in certain areas of the country e.g. some parts of Auckland.
