Govt sees sense over petrol tax
AA pleased govt has seen sense over its proposed petrol tax rise - organisation says minister has picked up on its idea
14 October 2004
The Automobile Association is pleased the government has seen sense over its proposed petrol tax rise.
The government's roading tax package planned for April next year would add 5.6 cents to every litre of petrol.
Finance Minister Michael Cullen is now looking at postponing the rise in light of record oil prices in the US.
AA transport policy general manager Stephen Selwood says he put the idea to the minister yesterday and is pleased he has picked up on it.
He says with oil prices continually reaching new highs the government must step in, to stop motorists being hit further in the pocket.
