Strong quake rocks central New Zealand
WELLINGTON : A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked central New Zealand early Thursday, but there were no reports of injury or damage, officials said.
The quake was was centred 80 kilometres (50 miles) northeast of Collingwood on the top left corner of the South Island, and was at a depth of 180 kilometres.
Following the shake at 1:15 am (1315 GMT Wednesday), the Geological and Nuclear Sciences department received 128 reports from people as far south as Mount Cook and north to Rotorua, seismologist Geoff Clitheroe said.
"It was felt quite widely across the country, but it wasn't strongly felt, it was a very gentle shake," he said.- AFP /dt

Are earthquakes common in NZ? Or is there an area lying on a faultline and people are just waiting for the 'big one'??? Hmm this doesn't sound good..

In the 9 weeks my parents have been here they've felt 2 !!!!
They are common (in this area anyway) but are usually very insignificant - just make your windows rattle that's all.
I actually quite like them. Doubt I'd say that if a biggie hit though.

If you go around Welly you will see little brass plates sunk into the concrete on the pavements which say " shore line 1855". Just see how much land is now being used as the CBD. It will happen again NZ is an active ,ever changing country. Volcano and earthquakes.

Again why wooden houses are a good idea in NZ, they shake and don't fall down. Having lived on the west coast of the usa for a long time, I can say that you do get used to quakes and "fear of the big one" does not rank among things I think of daily. More like robbers, traffic accidents and choking on my asparagus.

We experienced a 7.4 quake in LA in 1992 - it made us want to leave town
Not alot of fun in a skyscraper, I am starting to appreciate NZ construction methods
