Just been told that our kit will be delivered on 3/3 and that MAF will come out to our house to inspect the consignment. However, the shippers have told me that the inspection fee will be $237 because I have some contentious items (footy boots, golf clubs, cane furniture etc), and that I pay them, not MAF

Anyone know if this is standard practice or standard MAF inspection fee?

Cheers

Hi Mike

If you have got a bit to inspect sounds a good price to me. Insist on paying the MAF man and asking for an invoice from MAF first, you may well find that it is cheaper on the day.

You can do it while the maf man is at your house. Don't let the shippers hold you to ransom either.

Which shipper is asking you to pay them, just as a matter of interest. ;)

Need anymore help, just come back here. :D

How can they know what the fee is with out the inspection?
Can someone confirm that the MAF fee is what you pay for inspection, ( Somewhere on here is the bog standard, inspect no hassel or cleaning fee) + any necessary cleaning that MAF require. If MAf find stuff that needs to be cleaned then the fee will go up.
If the inspection isn't done yet how can they tell what the fee is.

Hi Debbie

They look at the inventory of your goods and pick out what they want to see.
So you pay based on the amount of stuff they want to look at.

Then if they decide stuff needs cleaning, treating for borer etc, you pay someone else, Centreport ot KwillKill to do that. Then you have to pay MAF for a reinspection fee.

Hope this helps

Pay Maf directly. the shipping companies just dream up a figure that is more than Maf need.

We paid approx $200 for the inspection at home more than normal as the inspector had to come to Waiheke on the ferry (ferry fares and +2hours travelling time) and $120 to inspect 2 cars and remaining stuff at the shippers.

I see you have cane furniture on the list. I have a load of wicker baskets and I was under the impression I would have to leave them behind. Can I take them and have them inspected. I love my baskets and would love not to have to get rid of them.

Willsken - wicker baskets? Dunno, I'll tell you on Friday!!!

As far as I can tell, it's the fact that creepy crawlies can get into the wicker/cane that MAF don't like. I did have to specifically declare it on the MAF import form and I didn't want to chance lying. We were bringing it anyway, because it was new and expensive. I'l let you know what MAF make of it

After talking to MAF this morning, I was told that I couldn't pay them direct because the shippers had made the booking, but I was warned that there are some tricks played by shippers. However, the nice lady at MAF did suggest that $100 of my fees will almost certainly be travelling expenses because we are at the end of the Whangaparaoa peninsula (and the MAF inspector is coming out on Saturday).

I think I'll have to cough up, because I suspect my stuff will be delayed otherwise, but I'll be chatting to the MAF man on Saturday to find out how much it really cost
