Kat... NZ$500 / month.. in Sumner, no... anywhere in Chch, not unless it's very dodgy :D

NZ$500 / week - yes. Definitely. We paid NZ$350 / week for an un-furnished 2bed house and landlord lent us his bach furniture for free.

Kat - when I said "definitely" I meant you could definitely get a place for NZ$500 - not that it was necessarily a good price! Do you know the address as I, or others on the forum who still live there, could check it out. Sumner is nice but there are still some dodgy properties there, as in any "nice" area it seems, and $500 is on the high side, even for Sumner.

Rentals should cost you anything from 200-400 max per week. There are details somewhere on the site that is to do with the bonds that people pay when renting. On here you can easily see who is paying what in which area. someone may be able to tell you what the department is called that takes the bonds when renting. I would estimate the adverage to be around 270 for a 3 bed house in median range. places like sumner can charge what they like as some have pools etc and the view and some people are daft enough to pay it....

christchurch has some lovey pubs in the city centre, and surrounding suburbs but dont think that nz is like the uk with those little pubs in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, as they dont exist. I think that the old fashioned working mens clubs are more common here, than in the uk.
I am not sure if the pubs think though is quite as relevant here anyway. Most people either drink at home or at friend bbqs instead.... we only go the pubs in kaiapoi for something to eat usually....them kinda restaurant type pubs, like the uk has loads of

hope this helps

Hi, is it true that most families in Christchurch have both parents working to maintain a reasonable lifestyle? As new migrant, who has neither close relatives or friends, how do mum & dad with kids handle full time job? Who takes care of the children before & after school?

Hi Moorf,

heres a link...its a Holiday rental, and has everything included...will that make it a better price.

http://www.holidayhouses.co.nz/properties/5706.asp

we have looked around, and it seemed a good price, compared to others available.

if someone can let me know, we were going to hire it for a month while we tour the area for somewhere to live.

will check the forum from work....37 days to go ;)

Hi Kat
I think that price is about average for a holiday home. We did the same thing when we originally came over, staying in one at Merivale at was costing us about $400 or $500 per week, (the old memory is fading, that was a long time ago!!)

Hi Edmundt
We are a set of those very Working Parents..:D and currently my daughter goes to an EXCELLENT 'homework club' which is located at the end of the street that her school is in. The caregivers pick her up from school everyday and take her to the club, where they have structured homework time and then play, which includes, for example, baking, painting, dressing up, outside playing etc... They also run a program in the school holidays.
We are in the process of relocating to Rangiora and one of the schools I have checked out actually run a before and after school program from the school...
So, my own experience so far has been that working parents are quite well catered for.....

Thanks Wilson,

I know someone who is renting the same appartment in March, so if it ends up that it has problems I will email the owner before we part with too much cash.

thanks
