Hi all,

My wife (Cricketlover) is already in NZ as a permanent resident and I assume, covered by the health system there. While in America, she was covered under my health insurance at work (for additional premium). I am considering dropping her from my insurance here to save the premium.

However, she will be returning to America in June for a couple weeks to help wrap up moving logistics. If I drop her from my insurance, would she be without health coverage during this time? More generally I guess, what type of health coverage do NZers have when the travel overseas?

Your insights would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Walter

If she is only coming over to America for a couple of weeks, wouldnt she be covered by travel insurance?

If you buy travel insurance from an insurance company you'll be covered, otherwise I assume NZ residents are liable for any bills they incur while in this US. It's the same for US citizens who go to NZ (as anything other than permanent residents).

I just spoke to a Southern Cross rep yesterday and have this advice: be aware that you have to purchase travel insurance that specifically covers pre-existing conditions if you have anything you are concerned about. In other words, be prepared to pay lots more for complete coverage vs coverage for "new" conditions. It may be worthwhile to spend the money, just be sure you get what you need.

The same goes for additional regular insurance. At least with Southern Cross, you have to have coverage for 3 YEARS before pre-existing conditions are covered. This could be a huge issue if you have a serious condition and you'd be wasting your money on top of it.

Given what I know about US health insurance, I have to believe that your wife is better off with a travel insurance policy then continuing to pay the premium for her on your policy, especially if it is COBRA coverage.
