I am not of the ideal weight! I am just curious if any one has turned in their medicals who has a few extra pounds. I would hate to get rejected on the basis that I need to loose a little weight.
Any input would be appreciated.

If being overweight was an issue with NZ medicals then I wouldn't be here! :D
A few pounds isn't going to matter, being morbidly obese or dangerously overweight may, however, mean they may want to investigate further, probably for the associated problems like diabetes etc.... not sure.

All I can tell you is that when we had our meds (last month) the doctor said that if we had had a high bmi then he would have had to do cholesterol tests.
Also, though I can't remember exactly, he said something about a female must have a waist measurement of under 32 inches, or more tests would be needed.
Fortunately we were ok, so I can't help much more than that.

We've downloaded the medical forms today & it would appear that they can ask for extra bloods if .......
1- BMI over 35
or
2 - waist measurment over 88 cm /34 inch women or 102cm/40 inch for men.
DH & I have been frantically gyming for 4 months & my BMI is still just over 30 (blushes ) it was 38 - EEEEKKK !!

Vic,
I had to look at the forms, not that I did not believe you. It seems that you are right on the money. I am not sure if this is a good deal or not. I have a 32.6 BMI, thus I am under the BMI threshold. I am not sure what my waist is????? I wear 38" jeans but I know that when the doctor measures it can be a bit higher than your pant size.
I am in the spot light tomorrow at 4:15 NZ time. I guess we will find out. The good news is that I have a little more than three months to turn in my ITA so I could just retest after hitting the gym and forget about the first test.
Wish me luck!

I went to tescos for some new jeans the other day & actually fit in size 16 's - I know that would mortify most people but i was SOOOOOO delighted .I beleive NZ sizes are larger than UK sizes - is this true ? OMG I could be a size 14 ???!!??
My motivation is NZ - I know how outdoor orientated it is having lived there & I don't want my weight to stop me doing everything I want to do when i get there . We really want to try kayaking & we love walking anyway - no way I'm huffing & puffing my way along the milford track .
Thanks for your encouragement - I really appreciate it !

My BMI was 30.6. Well that's not the great news but my BMI was not as high as I had predicted. I told the doctor how I had been working to eat a bit better but had no formal diet. I also told him now that I am in NZ and do not own a car how I think that will help me get more exercise and eat less FAST FOOD. He told me I had a good plan and did not make me take the additional blood test. He said I was boderline on the waist but he would let me go.
Thanks for everyone's support!

Vic,
Nz sizes for clothes are the same as the UK im afraid. Except for shoes which are american (so a UK 4 is a 6 here) and sometimes european 4=36?
Bra sizes are a nightmare! NZ| bras seem to be sized as dress size and cup size?????? So you get 14 dd for example! I mean - how am I supposed to understand that?????
Anyway - keep up the work. You are doing great.

I have just figured this out properly now, cup sizes remain the same, but back sizes are as follows-
12 - 34
14 - 36
16 - 38
18 - 40
20 - 42
Only way I found out was cos Bendon dual label theirs!

Hmm all this talk of size etc got me extremely worried now!
I am slightly "more" than a large guy. and my bmi would be more than 40 !!!! With a waist of 42" right now.
Is that it then? Never gunna make it to NZ now then?! And yeah slimmings great, but heh tried everything many a time, if it hasnt worked in past years its not going to work by 2007.
Thats my gutted for life now. Sentenced to life in UK :no :no

Lee,
Defiantley look at this now - first of all is your BMI ACTUALLY over 40? (Hope thast not too personal a question)
Its seems you would need to get it under 35 - and really only you can decide if you want to try and do that. I guess many of us on here can understand just how daunting that is - my own struggle still isnt over and I still have to make an effort every day.
I persoanlly dont like the BMI measument - but unfortunatley the medical profession still uses it, so does NZIS. I started out "technically" obese in size 16 clothes and im still "technically" overweight despite wearing small or size 10/12  Find out exactly what yours is - if it turns out to be 36 or 37 - that may be a bit less daunting for you to deal with than if it was 40 or over.
And hey - its been nearly 4 years since I last ate a Kit Kat!

Sadly yes i been "obese" for many years, although ive never felt it, still walk many miles daily and carry out my job up and down ladders all day etc no worries.
I knew the medical maybe a problem, but never a simple no-no
Even my own Doc in past has said the usual "must lose weight" but never been in much of a panic over it. I tried pretty much most things, just cant lose a lot, although a year or so ago i was gaining and i have managed to stabilse, but i have checked and without going into too much detail i am def in excess of 40 BMI with about 4.5 stone (65+ pounds) to lose just to get to lower than 35.
Really not sure i can ever do that, but belive i would love to, let alone by my goal of NZ by 2007.
This is a massive blow, and depressed isnt a strong enough word sadly, appriecate the help.

Hi Lee
Come on !!! calm down & take some deep breaths ........
now - the way I read the medical stuff was in order to avoid extra bloods etc BMI & waist measurment had to be below the stated figures . I'm aware that they'd like a BMI of less than 35 but I'm not sure that being above this would disallow you entry - think about rugby players they have very high BMI's .
I have a struggle with weight too so I understand where you are comming from , but.... you have a long long time before a medical , If you have a high BMI you may be able to get some medical help - make little changes .
A years hard work might just be worth it in the end - this is a glitch , that is all , it's by no means the end of the road , If its worth having its worth working for - right???
HTH

Thanks for advice, i have calmed down a load now, still worried about "my dream" but yes in a calm way. Not sure i will manage to get my BMI lower then the perfect 35 they want (well not perfect of course) so does anyone know more about the extra blood tests and what problems they find/could be? Also as my blood pressure has sometimes been a little high (but not clinically high, no medication etc) i gather these extra tests will be required.
(which is blooming great for me with a phobia of blood tests!)
Also my plan is/was to either way go to NZ in november as tourist and hopefully find work and get work permit etc and take it from there. Do i still need to get a medical for that?
Thanks all,
zardell

Hi Lee
I don't know if you will need a medical to get a work visa whilst you are in NZ (or in the UK either for that matter) but what I do know is that worrying about it wont help your 'sometimes been a little high' blood pressure !
I am sure though that you wont be the only overweight person that has gone to live and work in NZ. Maybe these extra blood tests are related to cholesterol and diabetes etc.........there will be someone on here who knows I'm sure.
Stick to your November plans and just go for it.
Whats the worst that can happen ?
Good luck with all your plans.

Thanks Julie,
Good advice as ever.
Just found this on NZIS site regards work permits:
* Working in New Zealand for more than six months? You may also need to provide a completed Temporary Entry X-Ray Certificate (NZIS 1096) to show you have been screened for tuberculosis (TB).
*Working in New Zealand for more than two years? You will need to provide a completed Medical and Chest X-Ray Certificate (NZIS 1007)
So i think i read that as i could get work visa for up to 2 years with just the chest x-ray for TB, meaning up to 2years in NZ getting fitting walking all those beautiful walks and scenery! Sounds like a plan. :cheers

Mi BMI was 35.5, so panel doc asked me to undergo fasting examinitions. However it seems that NZ medical assessors are not satisfied with this results. They asked me to repeat liver function test, Hepatit C and liver ultra sound scan. I think it is because my SGOT was a bit high (42). I hope they do not reject me for fatty liver, cause I have Hepatit B or C.

Sorry for dragging up a very old topic, but i wanted to post an update as i was months back quite worried about having a BMI of 40+, i am ashamed to say at its worse my BMI was 47 :( (very not proud)
BUT after starting out on the Cambridge Diet back in September with doctors orders and assistiance i have to date lost 5.5stone and got my BMI down now to 38 and lost 8inches from my waist! :cheers
Still got another 4-5stone to lose, and then my BMI should drop somewhat more, with plans to jet out to NZ in july/august i am hoping that if myp progress carrys on at this rate i might just might be in a "healthy" wieght and BMI by then :) Of course then keeping fit and keeping the wieght off will then be the challange, but the massive confidence boost will help to keep me straight and slim i hope.
How long does medical process take? As with me still losing weight fast i need to leave my NZ Medicals to as late as i can, so i was thinking of arranging medicals for late june time? leaving them for about 1month before i fly out, bearing in mind i am planning on going on a tourist visa only and then hope find work and get work visa, which i belive anyhow i dont need full medcial for 1yr work visa?
Anyway again sorry for dragging old posts back to top, but thought after everyones advise and comfort earlier in year i would let you know i am 5.5stone down so far!
EDIT: Should add as a result diet and lose, my blood pressure has plummeted too :)

Well done Lee! You have made some amazing progress towareds your goal, it'll be worth sticking to it, esp with all the health benefits too!
Shop around for medical prices and availability: our nearest in Cardiff had a six week wait and was £1300 for a family of 6. We ended up going up to Manchester to the wonderful Dr Million within 10 days of enquiring and it cost us £800 for a family of 6 including staying overnight and petrol!!!
Once you have the medical, results come back within a fortnight. Ours took less, IIRC.
All the best,

thats really good, its the health problems associated with overweight and one of the things they may do if weight is an issue is to give a second blood test for glucose intolerance as well as check sugar levels.

Hey Lee
Well done mate and congrats on what you've achieved so far.
And as has been posted by Gil, our medical results only took around two weeks to come back.
And it is not the bmi that is a problem, it is the health issues that go with it and all that they do is take some additional blood tests. You sound pretty fit though, so fingers crossed for all those. The doc threatened to do the additional blood tests on me, and so I had to fast, but he didn't in the end.
My only advice is not to have a drink before hand, as this can affect the results, or do any excercise, which could elevate your blood pressure.
Anyway, good luck, and keep us all posted on how it goes.
