Well I have had loads of positive response from the Airline question, thank you! now I have another!! car hire in NZ.
It's looking likely that we'll be doing our reccy end of May/June for nearly 2 weeks, flying into Auckland, can anyone recommend decent car hire?
Need something failry adequate for 2 adults and 2 kids plus 4 suitcases, and we'll be travelling around quite a bit.
Any comments/leads/suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks once again.

The NZ travel industry regulators get more complaints about car rental companies than about any other facet of the NZ tourism industry, so it's important to make sure that a bargain doesn't mean having to drive an old/unreliable/dangerous car.
Don't be put off the top tier rental companies such as Hertz because you think that they might be more expensive - get a quote from them before making up your mind (especially during the winter months when they might have spare cars knocking around and be eager to get them on the road). These guys normally have cars that are around 6 months old with all the important things such as ABS / airbags, and a product range that goes from v small to v large cars.
It's very tempting to try to save a hundred bucks or so by going for Okey Kokey Car Rentals, but what's $100 when your family's safety is at stake?

Good point!
Don't always think about those sorts of things whilst looking for car rentals. Think we are going to go with avis - they came back at about $400 for a weeks rental.

It could work out cheaper hiring a car from Christchurch to Auckland instead. A lot of hire companies end up with their cars in Christchurch and have no way of getting them back so offer a cheaper rental.
