I saw this thread (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3798) on getting mail in NZ through the Poste Restante service. It sounds just right for what we need at first. On the NZ post website (http://www.nzpost.co.nz/Cultures/en-NZ/Personal/ManageMailDelivery/PosteRestante/) it doesn't say to call in advance or anything, so I wondered if I could just forward my mail from the states to the Poste Restante location address listed for the Wellington CBD before we fly out and then go in to check for mail a week or so after we get there. Seems too easy to be true, but there's no point in my making an overseas call if it's not needed. Do you know whether you have to set anything up with the NZ post in advance?

Thanks!
Jessica

we haven't used that service for years but when we did we didn't have to notify in advance. Not sure how they will view it if its used in the long term as a POBox which it seems as if you are suggesting though.

Thanks Veronica. We don't want it for long term. Just want to give the post office here a forwarding address to use while we are looking at houses in NZ. As soon as we have housing sorted, I will give the US post office an updated forwarding address at the house and not use Poste Restante any more. So it would be for a few weeks only. Maybe there's a better way though?

Anyway, thanks for the info.

It really is just that easy, although I did call the post office here to check, because I worry about those sort of things.

They told me not to worry and just get mail sent to them. I was then able to get my mail redirected from the UK straightaway as the UK will not accept a redirection to another address once you have left the UK.

Don't expect the same applies in the US.
