Hi All

My wife is a keen amateur runner, do you see many runners out in NZ, there are some clubs on the web but some other (non-official) feedback from you guys on this would be appreciated.

Have you found the NZ amateur running community friendly ?

Are there footpaths and places where you can run 'off-road' ?

cheers

Just got back from a trip to visit my relatives in New Zealand. My husband and I are both amateur triathletes so we did some training while we were in Christchurch and Wellington. Christchurch is amazing for runners as there's a huge park in the centre and there are beautiful river paths throughout the city. We saw lots of runners around the park.
Wellington is more challenging but if you like hill training it would be great :) We stayed in Lower Hutt with one of my cousins where it's more flat and enjoyed running out there.
One of my relatives in Auckland does some running and she's happy with some of the routes she's found. You'll probably have to choose your location carefully if you want to run there though - it seems easier to get boxed in by major roads in some neighbourhoods.

I don't partake myself (as if...) so can't comment on the friendliness or otherwise of the community of runners, but can confirm that where we live you see loads and loads of people out running either on the beaches or the hills.

You certainly wouldn't be lonely.

The Mount is a magnet for runners. My wife runs everyday, and says there are always loads of people about. As far as paths etc, it does really depend where you are - ie more rural - you'll be running along country roads.

it seems as if all the types of sports here are thriving, running/athletics included
