Hello.
Did people tell their doctors and take their records?
If so how easy was it.
Are you allowed to take all the records or do they have to photocopy?
Was there a cost?
Maybe better to leave records and not tell doctors in case one returns?

Yes we did tell our doc that we were emigrating. When we asked them for our medical records we were told that they couldn't give them directly to us but if our new doc over here in NZ requires any info they can contact them.
Odd I know (seeing that the records are no use to anybody back in UK) - but that's the answer we got.

We got photocopies, the originals go back to some central library ready to be accessed if we return.
We got charged for the copies though, so if you are generally healthy, with no complications in your medical history, then its prob not worth bringing copies.

Yes, we told ours about our plans and was offered our records for the cost of 37 quid, but unsure whether that was each or as a family. We were told by our practice should we require them, just get the doctor here to fax across a request and they would fax them over, but since then we have registered with a practice here in Te Awamutu, and the receptionist told us for that to happen would cost them 50 pounds. Needless to say we declined that, and Elaine has just given them a rundown, of what's what with her condition(diabetes).

We told our docs and asked about medical records - up to a maximum of £50 each for copies! We decided we know enough about our medical histories to inform our new GP's in NZ when we get there. Under the data protection act you are entitled access to your own medical records - but they can (and do in most cases) charge photocopying costs.

Oi! Homeless person, how ya doing?
Back on topic, I read a thread here that it was possible to register in NZ with a doctor and then if that doc asked for the UK records they were supplied free.
Haven't tested that yet though :D
