Until very recently (i.e. the last couple of weeks), my preferred location was Christchurch. This was mainly due to it being on the South Island. Since then, however, I've done some research on Wellington and thought that Welly will probably suit me better because:

1) The climate - The South Island looks very nice, but the UK weather in the last few days has made me realise that I'd like to live somewhere milder. I've heard that although Wellington does suffer from strong winds, it also has fairly mild winters.

2) Location - Its proximity to both the South and North Islands makes it an ideal place to see the whole country.

3) Scenery - Although the South Island is supposed to be more dramatic/have the best scenery, the North Island still looks very nice judging by some of the pictures I've seen.

4) Transport - Not needing to use a car if you live in a Wellington suburb due to the train/bus service into the city centre.

I wondered if any Wellington residents have any comments on their experiences in Welly, especially in reference to the above points.

We came to NZ in 2001 for two weeks, only got a far a Welly.

We came back with the family in Jun 2004, with the aim to start in Auckland and end up in Christchurch. We got as far as Wellie. My husband found a job and we settled down in Upper Hutt.

Welly is one of the most friendly place I've been to, the people are great.

1/ Last winter there was 1 whole week where it was so cold I was watching telly with a duvet wrapped round me and hot water bottles. Rest of winter was pretty mild. Its a bit colder up here in the Wairarapa :no and even here we have had a whole 3 months of pretty hot summer. So for weather - if you can hack the wind - its great.

2/Location - cant really fault it - unless you need to get to auckland or Christchurch for work on a regular basis - and even then - if work pays its not really a hard deal. ANd its on a gorgeous bay - many of the burbs have views of the bay.

3/scenery - well - theres probably better (I hear able Tasman is to die for) but you can always visit those - Welly has pretty tasty scenery AND you can get a job to live there more easily.

4/ Transport. No complaints - though we found we still desperatly needed to head out of the city from time to time and really did need a car. Also it hepls to ahev a car to get a big shop from the supermarket - for me thats just easier than using busses.

Its a damn good choice - even if im a bit biased.

Of course - we also do the best coffee :D

Also - according to hubby - Welly has the 2nd highest count of all cities in NZ for the amount of sun it gets. Only people in Nelson get more rays!

Wellington ... just try and tear me away. A great city and one that I would be living in if it weren't for the kids :D

Well again biased - its a great city - we love it. It has everything a capital city should have, lots of culture, restaurants, bars etc. some great views and best of all central Welly is small enough to walk from one end to another - it really feels like a big city in a small town!
