Have you been yet? If so what was it like, 'spensive or reasonable?
It's the one on Thorndon Quay, near Freedom, isn't it?
Hope you and Mum enjoyed it.

Hey-
Welcome back!
Yep its near freedom, and i have to say it is rather good.
I had the exfoliation and a facial, and really enjoyed both. The exfoliation is a bit odd if you arent used to this sort of thing i guess. You spend anout 20 minutes in a steam room wearing one of those rather fetching G strings thingys and not a lot else, then the therapist comes in and slathers you with the exfoliant (in my case - coconut and vanilla - to die for smell!). Then you get left to steam some more, then shower off, then a coating of yoghurt (make sure you arent hungry :) ) to moisturise, and then that gets showered off too. Then its out of the steam room, and into the vichy shower (basically a big table with shower heads over it, and you get "rained on" with lovely warm water. Its blissful! I have to say i really did enjoy it.
Mum had her first hot stone massage, and now cant wait for me to do my training in a few weeks :)
So far - this has been the best place ive had anything like this. The therapists are very good - mostly indian or asian - so it can be a bit difficult to understand the accents sometimes. But they were happy to explain a few times till I understood. In fact - id be tempted to say its better than the Polynesian Spa - except that it doesnt have the hot pools.
Oh - and I also had by eyebrows threaded for the first time. Much better than plucking or waxing. Really impressed with that. And the waxing is a bit different too. Im definaltly going back!
Did you get to Hamner Springs? How was that?

 Threaded? But if its less painful than waxing or plucking - any chance of an explanation ?

Well, its kinda hard to explain really. Basically - they use a long peice of cotton thread, held so that its doubled up and then hold it tight. The space wetwwen the two sides of thread is used to grab the hair and remove it. Apparently its an ayuvedic method.
It felt a bit odd, almost like the thread was "shaving" the eybrow, but it actually does pull the hairs out. Its not pain free, but i did feel it was more comfortable than tweezers, and quicker.
Im sorry i cant explain it better

I've had my eyebrows done a few times now by an Indian lady ,it is a lot less painful than waxing .
I must admit the first time I felt that she had removed all my eyebrow :uhoh ,but she Hadn't .
She holds the cotton between her fingers and her teeth ,its very quick .

Its an form of alternative medicine and healthcare - from India. Think yoga :)
Theres a lot to do with diet - and eating the right foods for your type of constitution, nad it uses lots of natural products and massage techniques. Most eastern style spas uses ayuveda as the basis of thier treatments.
Rather scrummy (although i wouldnt say the thready is axactly scrummy :D )

Thanks for that Avalon.
When you explained it (which made perfect sense, by the way) I did remember hearing about it before.

Hi Avalon!
I'm movng to Auckland in a bit! Can you tell me about your hair removal... do they do it "down there" as well? Here in Switzerland I0m used to go to SHABA, which is all natural hair removal and much less painfull than Waxing... Do you know that?

I use East Day Spa in Auckland for threading. (Close to the Sky Tower.)
I was going somewhere much cheaper over near St Lukes mall, but the CBD is more convienient for work so I don't mind paying the extra.
One of my friends swears by someone out in Mt Roskill (or it could be Mt Wellington or Mt Albert - I can't recall), but I've not tried them personally so can't vouch for cleanliness or suchlike.
