It's very true: B.C. does look similar to the South Island of NZ. The scenery around the Sunshine coast - a ferry ride from Vancouver - is very similar to Milford sound (except without as many water falls). Victoria bears a passable resemblance to Christchurch: smaller city, older population, very British, hugging a coastline. HOWEVER the coastal area of B.C. is MUCH DAMPER than anywhere in NZ. Vancouver had 24 straight days of rain this December / January (non-stop drizzle).
I spent my early years migrating between Vancouver and Wellington and my impression as a kid was that NZ was just like B.C. except Kiwis had more sheep and an accent.

Never been to NZ but yeah BC for sure is very different than say Ontario or any other place in Canada. Victoria is nice and so is "Wetcouver" (Vancouver that is). You pay a lot more for properties but maybe that is same as in NZ. The non-stop precip makes it rather gloomy though; the sole reason did not want to relocate to BC ( besides, they don't have the same opportunities as Ontario for IT)
