Hi Susie
Welcome to the forum. :clap
I bought stacks of refs with us but nobody was bothered not even the rental company. I carried them about for a couple of weeks before filing them away.
The only thing we needed was passports and visa proof. Telecom waived their $150 bond on sight of my PR and PP and the bank used the same and also used our poste restante address.
Didn't bring our medical notes with us as the GP wanted something like 60 quid to copy them, but I had a couple of hospital appointments before I left and I asked that they copy me in on the update letters to the GP/Dentist. The consultant was happy to do so and I brought these letters with me.
Have you got PR and where are you heading for in NZ?

hello susie we went to rent a house today didnt need one reference and estate agent said they would arrange for gas electric and phone to be left on for us they would just do a final meter reading for last tenant before we move in. I took a holdall full of references for nothing. Its a beautiful house too. :)

We did not need anything either, just our PR seemed to be enough for most folks. Did not even need the proof of no claims for the car insurance.
You seem to just start a new credit history when you get here.

Hiya, i would suggest you bring medical notes if you have something dodgy in your medical history, but otherwise not needed. GP's can put medical records onto CD rom I have heard.
I was not aware that NZIS needed credit references - i have applied for work permits, and recently PR, and not asked for these.
When i arrived in NZ the electric company asked me to pay $200 bond which was instantly refunded as a credit on my bill as soon as they received my direct debit form (ie. i never actually paid over $200 - it just appeared as a charge and then a credit on my first bill). Telecom wanted me to fax a copy of my passport to them as proof of identity and then took a months rental in advance (which i understand is normal, even if you are a kiwi moving to a new address). This was all acheived while we were renting here on a visitor visa - no problems. I think having a bank account helped immensely, and credit references, checks, or whatever have never been needed.
