I need some advice from people that have applied for jobs in NZ. I am currently a Head of Faculty (Business and ICT) at a large comprehensive school (1200+ pupils) and the next step for me would be applying for Assistant Head posts. Now, I have seen an ad for the college in Dannevirke (530 pupils) wanting 2 assistant principals. Would I have a cheek applying for them? Is it a case of get back to the bottom of the pile and work your way up? :wah
This is probably me running before I can walk again but..........
I would love any opinion, but especially teachers out there. Please be honest...I'd hate to apply and look like a fool!! :o

Of course you should apply !!!
If they say 'Thanks, but no thanks' what have you lost ?
If they say 'Thanks - yes please' you have everything to gain.
Good luck........

I agree with this lot.
What have you got to lose, but you have everything to gain.
Go for it and good luck. :nice1

I'm no teacher but I'd say go for it. It's not as though they know you in person so they won't be pointing a finger at you each time you walk down the street saying 'ha - there's that person who applied for the job'. At this stage you're a name on an application form.
Nothing ventured nothing gained - what's the worst that can happen?

if they promote from within they may then have vacancies down the line it is ALWAYS worth putting in your application.
Nothing ventured nothing gained

My application for a job in NZ was a bit of a whim, really.
Now look what has happened, we will probably be there in two weeks time.
Beware of the Internet! :wah

Yes, go for it. There is sometimes an assumption that new immigrants have to take jobs for which they are overqualified as they will be overlooked for jobs at their career level or above in favour of NZ'ers. I think that's wrong, certainly in some fields, for 2 reasons -
1. there's a shortage of NZ'ers in some fields, so you may well have little or no competition for some jobs. NZ employers are actively recruiting abroad in fields where there is a shortage and I think many employers value the skills overseas people bring to their organisations (of course some don't, but then thats life!)
2. if you apply for jobs that are essentially a demotion you can be accused of 'just trying to get a job to get residency or cash or experience or whatever'.
I applied for a job that was much lower level when i arrived - and was asked why etc, indeed whole interview focused on why i was applying for this job when i had an MSc. They still offered me the job.
I then applied for a job which was a serious promotion. And I got that too. I was up against 3 other NZ candidates and later found out my employers were keen on the fact that i had overseas experience.
So go for it!

Go for it Nic - it sounds like you're well qualified for it. As the others have said, the worst they can say is 'no thanks' and you've not lost anything.
Let us know what you decide

We want a demo at the Auckland meet.....
Nicola, I would be tempted to apply for it, why should you have to take a step back just cos you are moving countries!
Some people take a step back, just to get a job to get here, and have a starting point, does not mean thats the case for everyone

Thanks for the responses everyone, I’m convinced! I will apply although I don’t hold out too much hope! Sometimes things are just too good to be true!
Well I’m off now to find myself 3 referees, hmmmm 3 people who like and respect me…….now that will be a job in itself! :roll

Yes, I agree, sometimes they are, but not this time Hon, not this time.
Go with the flow and let fate take a hand.

Just got back from finding referees. Well, I have now got 3 people willing to tell loads of lies on my behalf…… professional, enthusiastic, talented………. One was almost willing to say “recommend her without reservation” but the bribe wasn’t quite high enough! :roll
I have until the end of April to get the application in so I will now spend the next couple of weeks doing research on the EBS system - something to do with their discipline system! :exit
Time will tell and I will let you all know how it goes. Thanks again for all the supportive responses. :D
