I'm moving to NZ on a PR visa and will continue to work for the same company in the US from NZ. I don't make over 50,000 so I know some big money issues don't apply. I plan to try to find a good international tax advisor in Wellington to deal with filing, but for the moment I have told my US company to continue witholding as they have always done. Does anyone know if this is ok? Do I need to have my employer do anything differently before I get things sorted out with an accountant or advisor in NZ?

Thanks!!

My hubby also gets paid out of the USA. Don't know whether I can help you too much but here goes:

We obviously found ourselves a good accountant (2nd time lucky, the first was fresh out of college and knew jack ****). NZ and USA have a recipricol agreement which means any tax you pay in the US will be taken into account when you do your tax return over here. You don't end up paying any more tax than your salary bracket states, it's just that you will end up paying some at source in the US and the remainder here in NZ.

At this stage your US employer doesn't have to do anything, all you will need to do is have all of your pay slips to be able to hand over to the accountant when your tax return is due, he/she will calculate it for you (unless you're wanting to do it yourself of course).

Thanks very much Diny!! :D

And no, I will not be doing that myself. Just thinking about figuring that out makes my head ache.
