Lots of people say they've bought a car shortly after arriving. We'd like to do the same.
Literally the day or so after.
We won't have an address only cash in our pocket to buy it with. So how do you go about registering it? And what other papers do cars need?
A WOF will come with the car i guess but what about the registration?
Am I right in thinking there is no road tax?
If we buy a diesel can you hold off paying the diesel tax for a couple of days when we're a bit more settled.
Our plan is to stay in Auckland for a couple of days as I thought the choice would be bigger there, am I right?
We intend to settle in the BOP and most hire car companies want the car to return to the airport so another reason to buy in Auckland and drive to the bay in our own car.

You can register the car to a temporary address or a mail redirection.
The registration is a bit like road tax in that you have to pay it yearly (or six monthly / quarterly).
You need to prebuy your diesel RUC to be 100% legal.
Registration, WOF, and RUC are things you can negotiate around with the dealer though - most used cars will be advertised as plus on the road costs.
