Dear All

I am new to this forum, I have been reading down on some of the recent threads to do with assessment to gain entry and be able to work in NZ. I am really sorry if I come across as dim but I am unsure as to some of the abbreviations being used such as NZQA , IELTS and ITA. I have been onto the immigrations web site to try and suss them out but to little avail!!!

I am trying to find out about my OH as to when he should start to apply for his working permit and residency, we are planning to come out to NZ end of 2006 beginning of 2007. Are we too early to apply? is there a time limit of validity on a successful application? He is a GP with an abundence of experience (15 yrs). Is there a different route we need to follow with his qualification?

Sorry this seems like 20 questions, Last but not least, do I need to go down the assessment route, I am 4 months from qualifying as a nurse, but am Australian born with a current Australian Passport?

Thank you for reading.... I hope some one can help :D

OK, can offer some answers but not all!

NZQA is the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and they assess you qualifications and convert them to the NZ equivalent

ITA – Invitation to apply. This is when you get drawn from the pool and are asked to supply all the evidence to back up what you have said in you application.

About when to apply. I have read that doctors can only register once they are in NZ so I am not sure on this one. There is a thread about this going at the moment. (Re registration – might be worth posting the question on there.) We are going down the PR rout and planning to go over about Sept 2006. We have all the paper work in and are waiting to get a case officer. This part seems to be very slow so depending on the route you are going to go I would do it now.

Good luck

Dear Nicola

Thank you for your information, what is the PR route? have you done your ITA and NZQA? is that what you mean when you say that doctors may need to register when they reach NZ?

Where is the ongoing thread about registration?

regards

Lee

Hi Lee

I will explain the process as far we are concerned.

I am a teacher and I needed to convert my qualification. (I did this by sending my certificates to NZQA) They take quite some time to do this and I sent the application off at the very start of the process. (Last July) I then sent the converted qualifications to the teaching council to register to teach in NZ.

We then completed the online expression of interest. We were selected from the pool 2 days later. Once this happens you get the ITA and have 4 months to send back all the documents. These include:

Converted qualifications (NZQA)
Teacher registration (teaching council)
Medicals
Police Checks

All these things take a while to come through and I sorted all these at the beginning. The difference as far as registering in NZ for your profession (doctor) you have to register once you get to NZ and can’t do it from the UK as you can as a teacher.

PR is Appling for permanent residence (or some people get a working visa and apply for permanent residence when they get to NZ and find a job) I preferred to get the PR in the UK before we sold up and went over there – I just felt for us it was a better option.

I think that the key to doing this is to be organised. Make a list of all the things you need to do and be systematic.

The thread you need to look at is
