This might sound like a silly question, but when you leave for NZ does your luggage have to be in one suitcase or can you take two providing the weight is within the limit?

Think the total weight is the limit, you can use more suitcases;
check with the airline ;-)

The rules vary depending on the airline and the route. The info should be on the airline's website.

Air NZ are strict on this, two checked in bags per person only (no one bag to be over 32kg).
